My turn to have a bad day :(

Ugh, I'm now 17 days out from surgery.  I was feeling good - abet a lot of pain in my big incision.  I had no issues with food...

until... last night!  For dinner yesterday I had 1/4 cup of pureed chili, 1 tablespoon of fat free sour cream, and a little under 1/4 cup of low fat shredded cheese.  This was around 7 pm.

Around 10 pm last night I started to feel very sick.  I ended up dry heaving multiple times, had diarrhea, and the sweats, all the flu like symptoms.  This went on until nearly 2 am.  I would have hightailed it to the ER if I didn't live alone.  But I didn't want to drive feeling that way.

This morning I'm really feeling crappy.  My stomach area is really tender and sore (I'm guessing from the dry heaving) and I really feel crummy.  It's one of those days where I wonder what the hell I did to myself.  I know it's going to get better - but the last 17 days have seemed like FOREVER!

My stomach feels so tender and usually what I do when I feel this way is snack on saltines - but I can't do that.  It's like everything has changed!

Aw, I'm sorry you are sick. Maybe you ate too fast or too much. Hope you feel better soon.

So sorry to hear that!!!  I have not had my surgery yet (a little over a week away), but I know I'm scared to death of vomiting!  I really hope you get to feeling better soon and this was a one time thing!

I will tell you, there is one "good" thing about vomitting... there is no bile, so it doesn't burn as much!  I guess there is a silver lining.

I am a littler further out then you, almost 4 weeks and I can only get in about 1/4 cup of food TOTAL. Sometimes not even that much. So, it might have been a bit too much food for your pouch, or perhaps the spices that were in your chilli. Remember our pouch is like a newborn baby, so we need to introduce foods and spices to it gently and over time. My advice would be to stay on liquids today to give your pouch some rest. I hope you feel better soon!

After reading all the replys....it could have been multiple things causing you this.   First off....17 days out from surgery.....1/2 c of food I believe was probably more than your pouch could take and maybe the chili was a little to heavy to eat being so newly post op.   Did you eat it very slowly?   I know when I was newly post op it would take me about a hour to eat 1/4 c of food.    Remember to eat VERY slowly and chew till there is nothing left but liquid.   Praying you feel better really soon.  I doubt that you are sick sounds like it was the chili and you probably just had your first bout with dumping syndrome.   That is NOT fun at all.   DO liquids for a couple of days and then start again slowly with food is my advice to you.

Hugs and blessings ~~~ Vivian

I did eat the 1/2 cup over an hour, and I would say I probably only ate 3/4 of it anyway... The dogs are LOVING this diet, they get all kinds of small left overs of the portions I can't eat.  If I make something, I take my portion out, and often don't fini**** so they get something yummy (to them!) on top of their food.

I'm still sore, and today I've only had jello and water, and I'm not thinking of eating much else.  I'll get my water in - but today's proteins will have to suffer.

That is why I love this surgery.  That was a smack on the hand that you over did it.  Give it a couple of days of clear liquids and see if it gets better.

I think several reasons could be what caused it.  First, you should only be eating 1 1/2- 2 oz of food per meal.  My NUT tells us that we should not take longer than 20 minutes to eat a meal at a time so if you are not done after 20 minutes throw it away.  The chili may have also irritated your new stomach pouch. You would have probably been fine before surgery to even have it a little spicier and with a kick but now our pouches have a mind of their own. Also, are you taking a stomach acid pill? I am on prilosec and will be for the rest of my life.  Good luck and hope it passes. I would probably stay away for a while from that food choice but then introduce it again in a week or more and see how it goes then.
