I am 9 days post op....two of my incisions have become really red and sore. The redness is only were the staples enter my skin. The incision itself is fine. My question is.....is this an infection. My doctor tols me to only use soap and water on it but I did put some peroxide on them just now.

FYI there is no ozzing, etc

Are you running any fever?  Is there any drainage?  Is the area around the incision/staples warm, tender to light touch, hard?  Do yourself a favor and call your surgeon's office and speak with the on-call nurse or physician.  BUT, if those above questions are answered with a "no", chances are it's normal.  When do you follow up for staple removal?

Go to see a doctor as soon as you can. I have a staph infection in my middle incision and my PCP took a culture to see what kind. It came back ok and he gave me augmentin to help get rid of it. He also gave me betadine sponges to wash twice a day. Its safer to let them look at it and culture it if they think it needs it. It may just be irritated a little and have no infection at all, I hope thats what it is. Good luck.

It is very common to have redness and some tenderness where the staple*****ture the skin (think of having your ears pierced).  Unless it is hot or draining something, it shouldnt be a problem to wait until Monday to have your surgeon look at it.

I am honestly surprised that some surgeons still use staples.  I have had a bunch of surgeries in the past 12 years (with 4 different surgeons), and the last time anyone used staples instead of glue -- for open or lap procedures -- was in 2002.

Chances are they are not...in fact I just had my staples removed today and had the same thing going on...very red and even a slight fluid build up making the red areas puffy.  My nurse said it it normal.  She likes to take them out a few days before the 2 wk mark because at that point, skin starts to grow OVER the staples, yet your stomach is starting to get smaller and it pulls on hem...so ya have a couple things going on.  Like they said above, no fever, no gross puss leakage, you should be good to go...but if either of tht happens, do not wait to call.  Good luck to you...and by the way, as soon as the staples come out, thy will itch, but feel a 100 times better :)

I had glue on my incisions. Not one staple or stitch, all was done from inside. I had no pain then or now. My surgery was done on 9/11 and I am all healed up and the scabs are gone. I don't think you have an infection unless you have oozing and a temperature and the skin around the incisions is hot to the touch. I'd wait until Monday. I did have staples once after cardiac bypass and they are painful and caused my skin to pull and hurt. They were red and sore most of the time, but never had an infection. I couldn't wait to get those staples pulled out.
