Getting all your liquids in?
RNY on 08/14/12
I didn't have a problem getting liquids in when that's all I was consuming. However, I've noticed lately that I'm lucky to get in my minimum. I'd really like to be closer to 10+ cups per day. Any good tips on getting it all in? I have tried using a Nalgene bottle, counting my glasses per day, counting my shakes, etc. I'm still drinking Crystal Light, as plain water doesn't always sit well. I'd prefer plain water, though...

I have yet to really get 100% of my water in (now that I'm eating, like you said). Plain water sits blah on me. If it's too cold it cramps me up. I do better with crystal light or herbal tea, but with the half hour before/half hour after drinking restriction, I feel like there's not enough time to drink everything I should.

I try to get as much water in in the morning as I can. That way I won't be thinking about multiple trips to the bathroom during the night.
I have a large insulated cup that holds 24 ounces. I try to get three in before lunch. I drink one plain water before and during my morning workout and then start one with crystal light along with my protein shake breakfast. I then start another one around 10:30-11:00.
This way I am not tempted to drink during my lunch and I am ok to wait an hour or so after lunch to drink more.
I probably consume 100 ounces of liquid per day. Everyone is different, I am 5'8" and quite active. My job involves dealing face to face with clients, talking all day makes me thirstier too. I think if you are pretty small, not very active and in a cold environment it might be harder to drink that much water.
You might try hot tea (decaf of course), switching up the temperature helps add variety and might make it easier to drink more frequently.
Good luck getting your fluids in!

I set goals for the amount of fluids I drink during the day. I drink 24-32 oz between 6a-12n, 12n-6p and 16-24 oz between 6p-9p. I also drink up to 10 mins before a meal, but wait 45-60 mins after a meal. Also, when I was advance from liquids to very soft food at 3 weeks, I stopped sipping and took normal swallows, but only 3-4 swallows at a time at least 10 mins apart. Over time, I was able to take more swallows closer together. Now I can take about 8 swallows, 5 mins apart. I don't gulp/guzzle my fluids...never did before surgery.
I struggle with this every day. I drank more water than everyone that I know (pre-surgery) and now, when I try to drink bigger swallows or multiple sips in a row, I hurt and so it's hard for me to get it in. Doc recommends that I try different temperature liquids. I have to admit that tea/coffee (warm)goes down better.
