What causes thrush?

I am waiting for my PCP to call in Nystatin. I know it's thrush but unsure why I have it. Anyone else have it post-op?  My surgeon will not treat me for this which is why I am waiting on my PCP. In the meantime I am rinsing with hydrogen peroxide.

Thanks.

Thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth. It is often triggered by antibiotic use or steroids (like some asthma inhalers).  It can come on when our immune system is a little off kilter for some reason.

hope it clears soon.

I do use an asthma inhaler but have never had this before. Probably in combo with the surgery has my system out of wack. Thanks!

Rinsing your mouth out with water after using your inhaler will help prevent thrush (assuming one of your inhalers is a steroid inhaler).

I got Thrush after my post op,  food and liquids tasted metalic to me!  The surgeons nurse asked me over the phone if I had a white coating on my tongue and I sure did!  She called in a prescription... Took it for 10 days and it was gone...   I thought only babies got it!! LOL who knew!  Can't believe your surgeon!!  Good grief!!  Good luck to you!

The surgeons office said I was too far out and had to be treated by my PCP. I'm only 3 months out but he won't see me for it.

Hi!
Yeah, I had thrush 5 days post-op along with Strep throat.
The Nystantin liquid cleared it right up.
I thought the sore throat was from being intubated so long in surgery (4 hours)
but turned out to be Strep. I have had thrush before and this episode was bad.
TMI - I was able to scrape stuff off my tongue with a teaspoon. It was gross.
Like I said, Nystantin worked on the thrush almost immediately and on the Strep
within days. Who knows where it came from.
Good Luck!

I've been fighting yeast infections since right before surgery, so I feel for you. I thought it was finally over, but wouldn't you know it came back? Ugh. Hopefully, the nystatin will help clear up the thrush for you.

For over a year now i have been through endos and manometrys due to yeast.....if you google it you will see that there is a yeast  that starts in the esophogus and it coats everything, gets very thick and goes thru your esophogus in the stomach can cause ulcers and up thru into your mouth and can also travel down giving you a yeast infection down below. Diflucan is an antibiotic that will kill the yeast they give you a seven day dose and also ask for carafate in liquid suspension. it coats and helps sooth. it can make it hard to swallow and can be very painful. i go in for my RNY surgery on Nov 27th....so hopefully this will help me.
