Fluids and timing

Okay so my program states no drinking 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after a meal. I get 30 minutes after but why 30 minutes before? It makes it really difficult to get my fluids in. I'm tempted to break the 30 minutes before rule. I'm never full from water cuz it goes right through. Opinions??

many people and some doctors feel the before rule is not necessary. My doctor states I can drink up until the first bite. but then I have to wait an hour after so it's still an hour out of my time for every meal. It's up to you but I think if you search the topic on here you will find most say it's okay to drink before.

Different views on this. My surgeon's program was 30 before, 30 after and this was his reasoning: right out of surgery the pouch is very small. For some the drinking will make you full, full to the extent you can't eat enough. Drinking does keep me full, yes it goes through like a funnel so I know it isn't stopping me from eating however I eat about half of what I can eat if I stop drinking 30 minutes before even now.

Once we were able to eat more then it was our choice on the 30 minutes before rule.

My protein shakes are 33 grams of protein each and I'm considering going back up to two a day because I'm concerned I'm not getting enough protein. It is hard to get an exact amount when I mix things like egg salad and stuff. I can't eat very much right now. So that would mean that I would be over my protein amount with 2 shakes. I think it would be easier to get my fluids in then and just have one meal a day.

My question is, will this slow me down on getting to a point where I can fit my whole amount of protein in with mostly food??

I'm glad this topic came up again. Based on my readings and experience, and my knowledge of our new anatomy after RNY, I have been drinking up until the minute I eat (because I figure the water goes right through like a funnel) and waiting to drink again until at least an hour after I eat (to keep food in my pouch longer, thus keeping my appetite under better control-- newbies don't want to wait this long.) HOWEVER, I recently read a scientific study that measured the rate at which liquids and solids empty from the pouch. The study found that 1/3 of the liquids are STILL in the pouch after 10 minutes and that most of the patients still had about 3/4 of their meal in their pouches 100 minutes after the meal. So I have decided now to stop drinking at least 15 minutes before eating and, since I eat dense proteins and don't have difficulty getting my fluids daily, I will wait as long as I can to drink and no less than an hour. This will be hard for newbies who struggle to get in all their fluids, but I can usually wait at least 1 1/2 hours comfortably.

Can you post the link or at least the citation to this study?  I'd be interested in reading it.

Thanks!

I'd like to read the study also. Not doubting, I can actually relate to what I feel based on this comment. Liquids really do fill me up a lot a keep me full for a while.

There is no medical reason not to drink right up until you start to eat.
