I am home from the hospital as of a couple hours again, I am in a lot of pain and can't seem to get enough sleep. I am so excited to start this new chapter in my life but man I am oh so out of it right now. I haven't had any trouble with nausea just pain in my stomach and where my incisions are. How long did it take you guys to start feeling normal again after surgery?

I am 2 weeks and 2 days out. I still am not sure what my new normal is going to be. I had an infected incision that needed to be opened and drained last weekend and have had much more pain since then. My advice to you is to take your pain and nausea meds regularly, especially the pain meds. Dont get behind the pain, it's best to stay in front of it! Sip water as you're spposed to and it will help w nausea. You just had major surgery, so feeling out if it is normal. Be sure to rest and sleep when you're tired so you heel! Good luck .

I was off work for 8 weeks total - 4 weeks sick leave, 4 weeks vacation leave.  I found that each afternoon I needed a nap.  Plus I slept each night.  Your body is going through major changes and it is trying to heal from major surgery.  Once I got home from the hospital I no longer needed any pain meds.  I had some discomfort at times as I moved around but no real pain.

I made sure that each morning I took my shower and got dressed.  I also went out each morning for a small trip to a store (grocery or otherwise) to walk around a bit pushing a cart.  That got me out of the house and walking.

I found it took me a while to get into a routine regarding my food, vitamin and liquid consumption.  I needed my intake log to help me remember if I had enough fluids and protein each day.

Then once I went back to work, it took me about 1.5 weeks to get into the routine of being at work, ensuring adequate nutrition and fluids.

After 3 months I felt like I knew the protein count of most foods and had a routine of drinking a certain amount during the day so that I only needed 2 more cups after dinner.

Good luck in working it out for you and I hope your recovery improves with each day.

I'm 9 days post-op (6 days at home).  I felt the same way, for the first few days at home I slept a lot.  When I was awake, I made sure to try to take short walks (like a lap around the backyard) every hour.  On my 2nd day home I'm tried taking it less frequently than I was allowed, but I paid for it and the pain caught up with me.  So definitely, take it regularly and stay ahead of the pain like the other poster mentioned.  Also try to get in all your fluids.  I have struggled with that, and yesterday at my one week follow up my dr said I could be dehydrated and that could be adding to the pressure and nausea I was feeling.  Each day I feel a little better, but like you, I'm waiting to feel normal again.  Good luck!

I had surgery on Oct 9th. It took a good two or three weeks before I felt good. It got better with every passing day. Now I feel

fantastic. Remember to sip sip sip and walk. Good luck to you. Keep us posted.

I feel normal today!  I am 19 days post-op.  I would have felt better sooner but I managed to pull/strain my stomach muscles and that caused me more pain than the surgery.  The first week was the worst.  I had no energy to do anything and the pain was front and center.

Welcome home and to the loser's bench! I felt pretty normal within the first 2 weeks. I was able to sleep in my bed the first night I was home and things have just gotten better since I started my journey. Good luck to you on your journey!
