First RNY Thanksgiving...soup kitchen then home :) So far, good!
This was my first Thanksgiving since my RNY. I worried, worried, and worried about how I would deal with eating such small amounts and possibly not having foods that I enjoyed prior to my surgery. Well, just like most things in my life...I worried for nothing!
My daughter and I went to our local soup kitchen to serve food to the needy. There was a wonderful chef who volunteered his time to cook for the people. The food looked so good, but knowing that this may be the only meal that these people have for the day...maybe longer, it was so satisfying to "serve" and not eat. We were offered a meal, but I took just a few bites of plain turkey. When I say plain, I don't really do the turkey justice. It was very tasty, flavorful turkey. My daughter ate some stuffing, because I made whole grain stuffing with LOTS of celery and onions and she wanted to have some "real" stuffing, oh and a slice of "real" pumpkin pie. I made an almond and pecan crusted, sugar free pumpkin pie. We visited the church next to the kitchen, met some great people and prayed with them.
As we were at the kitchen, our turkey breast was baking in the oven at home. I cooked last night, so all I had to do was bake the turkey and then heat things up. Everything came out nicely.
It turned out that the stuffing was very good, and met the requirements for "tasty" by my daughter. I had turkey with a dab of gravy, small spoonfuls of dressing, homemade sugar free cranberry sauce, carrots and peas, green bean casserole, about 5 kernels of corn, and a few bites of the pumpkin pie. Everything was made with either no butter or low fat ingredients, and I added extra seasonings and spices.
My daughter and husband had a second serving of foods. It took me as long to eat my foods as it did for them to have theirs. I took my time, chewed, put my fork down, and honestly...I got full. I wasn't able to finish the food on my plate. I would guess (didn't measure everything) it was about a total of 1/4 cup that I was able to eat. I'm stuffed, as if I ate in years past!
SO, with that all being said.....I am THANKFUL that I made the decision to have my RNY. My life has changed in just these few weeks in ways that go far beyond what words can describe!
I pray that I can continue to be successful, and healthy, in using my new tool.

I bet this is the Thanksgiving you will remember well for how good you feel and for the kind things you and your daughter did. Happy Thanksgiving!
