has anyone on here thought they was going in for a lapriscopitic surgery then it been switched to open surgery? i have been on the protein liquid diet for 2 weeks. 60 to 80 protein a day and between 400 to 650 calories a day. i am so worried about this. 2 more days on the 11th.

I had LAP surgery, but was warned it may turn to an open procedure if necessary. It's a very slim chance of it turning into an open procedure, but I think your surgical team has to let you know it's a possibility--no matter how small of a chance. I honestly wasn't worried about it--that was the last thing on my mind. LOL

I have heard of people that the surgeon started the surgery but the liver was too big so he stopped and did not perform the RNY.

My understanding at my hospital, is that they tell the larger patients that this is a possibility.

My surgeon tells all his patients that but rarely has to do open. The consent form I signed was for either and my bmi was only 41. My thought was that I would rather have a safe open procedure than to have something nicked in a laproscopic one.

I went in for LAP RNY on May 10, 2006. Surgery was first one of the day, around 6:30 AM.  Just before "I went under" the anesthesia, I was asked to sign a form.  It basically said I was there for a LAP RNY, but if "conditions warranted", I authorized the surgeon to do an OPEN procedure.  The operating staff was there, anesthesiologist, operating room designated for my surgery, etc.--$$ to pay for my surgery was already set.  If my liver was too big, if issues prevented the LAP instruments being operable, etc.--the surgeon could do the surgery.  The primary reason for inability to do the LAP procedure is usually large amounts of fatty liver deposits.  DAVE

I was told this at my consult Wednesday with my doctor and signed papers.  He explained he has to advise all his patients because of things that could interfere (like too much scar tissue from my hysterectomy).  He said he doesn't forsee this happening, but they really don't know until they go in.   I am having my surgery Tuesday too.   Good luck to you!

You will sign papers I am sure right before surgery so that you understand there is always a risk to surgery or having an open RNY. You are essentially giving him/her permission to proceed with an open procedure if needed.  Yes, there have been a few that went to an open, but not that many.  Some have discontinued the surgery due to fatty livers or other problems.  They will not know until they get in there.  But as with all of us, we are very aware and that's not a bad thing.  You should do just fine.  Many people aren't even required to be on a 2 week liquid diet and do just fine. Best of luck, Jane

I had lap when banded but open when band was removed and RNY performed.  My surgeon will do lap but prefers open.  I healed fine with the open RNY and had zero complications.
