Band to bypass stories?
Thanks Hun, I'm home so I'm pretty happy at the moment, should be ok for now as I still have the drain in which they think will be in at least over chrissie break but whatever keeps me home works for me :-)
I am having surgery to remove my band and convert to a gastric bypass. I had my first band in 2007, it slipped so we asked ins to cover sleeve but was denied so my doc placed another band in 2010. I lost 90 lbs. during the last five years. In january of this year the reflux increased ugi confirmed I had a hiatal hernia. So after he removed the small fill, fixed the hernia the next 7 mo I have regained 40 lbs. I felt some relief for a few months but never could tolerate over 3cc in my band. (10cc). The reflux and chest pain returned 3 mo after the repair, so in sept an ugi was repeated to find my stomach is prolapsed into my esophagus. My surgery is this Tuesday, and I'm getting a bit apprehensive, but i really can't wait to wake up and be rid of this band. My doc says some bodies cannot tolerate a foreign object inside them, so I hope that is the case and not my own failure.
another thing i can add is that I know 6 people who had a band and 5 of us have had band slips. Hope you find the right choice or you.
you can read my profile. i am a band to RNY. 2 years post op
if people felt it was worth it? for me yea, it was well worth it. I would do it over again. i was very against the rny
How much weight lost? when i had my revision i started out 218 and now weigh between 155 and 160 so around 60 pounds.
goal weight was 145. i got down to 149 and my face looked horrible. i sorta looked like a sick monkey. I did not like how i looked in face
im going to be honest. its not always easy. i did good in the beginning drinking liquid supplements slow. i did not have that stuck feeling or gagging feeling like some people do. i did feel like i could eat more than some people in the beginning. Because this is my second time around i did feel like i knew what i could handle and would eat or drink what was on plan.
I lost very slow but steady. When everybody stalled i was still losing a tiny bit. In the beginning i lost 1-2 pounds/week then later on i lost 1/2 pound some but most of the time the scales did move.
My biggest advise is to follow your plan, exercise as much as you can. try to lose as much as you can the first 6 months because that is the honeymoon period and for revision patients that seems to be our greatest weight loss. not saying you can't lose after the first 6 months but it is harder.

Scarlett - I sure hope everything works out for you in the end. I will be a band to RNY on 1/4/13 and hope everything goes well. I have been vomiting many times daily for close to four years. I did not do anything about it as the place I had it done did not accept my Medicare when I had to leave work. They do now and I think I have found a great doc. He looks like he should be on a TV show and has good reviews!
I am happy to have found these forums which will be my only support and want to know the good, the bad and the ugly ahead of time. I think I am as prepared as I can be and have a pre-op on 12/26 where I will do all my labs and have my visit with the nutritionist. Once I find out what my doc's rules are for eating, I will do some stocking-up. Right now, I have ordered flavorings and will pick up some protein powder when I am out next. Short of lifting my old blind and deaf dog, I think I have most issues thought out.
