Protein powder, fruit, coconut milk, straws

3-1/2 months out, slow weight loss, looking for solutions.  I know I need more protein, but my surgeon insists he wants us to get protein from solid food only.  That's great, as far as it goes, but there's no way I can get that much in a day, especially this early.  He said that at my next visit (Jan. 8) we'd look at maybe adding a shake.  I've decided I'm not going to wait, I'm just going to do it now, to see what happens.  I don't think it'll be the end of the world, although I might want to check the Mayan calendar again, to make sure they weren't off by a day or two, LOL!

My problem since surgery with protein is that it all tastes way too sweet, and I just haven't been able to choke down anything,or I would have added a shake sooner, to bump up my protein.  Then, I met a woman in the checkout lane at the grocery store who was buying unsweetened coconut milk, and she told me she uses it with protein powder and frozen fruit (NSA).  She said it was thick and delicious, not too sweet, and swore buy it.  So, I bought some, and I'm sitting here trying it now.  I'm LOVING it!  Here's what I did:

1 scoop Jay Robb vanilla protein (110 cal., 25 gr. protein)

1/2 cup fruit NSA fruit - peaches/strawberries/bananas (35 cal.,)

1/2 cup unsweetened coconut milk (23 cal.)

Total:  168 cal., 25 gr. protein

I took a sip of the milk before I used it, and found it looks like milk, but more or less tastes like water.  There appears to be no real nutritive value (unless I'm missing something), but mixed with the protein and fruit, it tastes better to me than water.  Or is it just my imagination???

One thing I'm wondering about is the glycemic value of the fruit, and whether or not that will negatively impact my weight loss.    Can anyone fill me in on that, or recommend a reliable source for doing my own research on it?

Also, I'm drinking with a straw.  Good or bad thing to do at this point in time?  I know it's bound to bring in a little extra air, so that could be a problem, but other than that, if it doesn't get painful, any other reason not to use one?

I personally don't think fruit, especially in moderation, will have a negative effect on weight loss.

Straws don's cause any kind of damage to your pouch.  If it gives you gas and is uncomfortable, don't use them.  Otherwise, they are fine.

No matter how much sugar the individual fruit has, if you are only using half a cup, it is not going to effect your weight loss in any way.  Some people find that bananas bother them early out (and they can contribute to constipation), but peaches and any kind of berry would be fine.  A simple Google search should help you find a list of fruits with lower GI values.

I don't think fruit is going to bother you as long as it is in moderation and you watch the sugar. Along with the sugar in the coconut milk, if there is any. As for the straw I was told to never use one cause of the air it creates. I am not sure if there are other reasons to not use it but it's not that important to me so I am going to steer clear of them but if it really matters to you, don't use it till you ask your doc or nurse just to be safe. I wouldn't want to risk anything just to use a straw ya know. I do love drinking out of straws but hey we had the surgery to CHANGE old habits so if that is one of them I will do it, LOL.

My surgeon says a straw is fine as long as it doesn't make you uncomfortable.  I does to some and doesn't to some.
