Poll- did you "cheat" on your pre op diet?
I didn't cheat. I was only on a liquid pre op diet for five days and it was a little challenging but not that hard. I was so excited that my surgery was almost here that it was pretty easy to stay focused.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
My pre-op diet was 2 weeks of liquids. Three protein shakes a day, sugar-free drinks, sugar-free popsicles and chicken broth if needed. The only "cheat" I had was one cup of regular coffee each morning instead of decaf. I was a heavy coffee drinker before and going cold turkey was too much. So I had one cup of regular in the morning. I told the surgeon and he said no problem.
Otherwise, I did not deviate from the plan. In fact, I didn't even eat the SF popsicles because I realized by the 2nd day that they just made me hungrier. I was determined to stick to the plan so that my liver would shrink and the surgery would be as safe as it could be.
I start my new pre op liquid diet on January 8, and now that I know what to do, I am optimistic and foresee no reason why I would need to cheat.
I think I had something within the first three days of my 2 week preop liquids phase, but I can't remember what it was. On the other side, though, three days before surgery, I went to my friends' annual Burger competition, and didn't have a single thing, which was EXTREMELY hard. I just stuck with my shakes, knowing that surgery was so close.
Whatever I had early out didn't effect my surgery at all--I think it was crackers?
My 2 week preop diet consisted of 2 shakes and one meal of 3 oz of protein. I could have up to 2 sf jello, 2 sf popsicles and 2 cups of broth in addition each day. By the end I was just doing the 2 shakes and protein and was satisfied. I cheated for breakfast one morning at one week out. We were camping and went into town to breakfast, I stuck to mostly protein however I did have a few bites of hash browns and one slice of wheat toast. It didn't hinder the operation to my knowledge the doctor said everything looked good. I did tell him about my cheat and he didn't seem concerned.
I'm on day 2 of my liquid diet. I'm allowed 4 shakes a day, but find it hard to consume even three. I haven't cheated. Have been very focused. I made my family christmas breakfast this morning, scrambled eggs, chicken bacon (my favourite) and toast. Didn't cheat. I also baked nanaimo bars, lemon squares and cupcakes last night and didn't even lick icing off my fingers.
I keep telling myself if I cheat once I'll open the floodgate. So I'm trying my very best not to.
Yes.. I did cheat with no ill effects. I was on 2 week liquid diet drinking 4 HMR 800 Protein drinks 1 yogurt and all the sugar free drinks I wanted along with vitamin regiment. Right smack in the middle of the two week cycle I was out and couldn't resist eating a couple of slices of pizza and drinking coke. I also had a couple of pieces of sliced deli ham just about every day. Went through surgery with no problems and 8.5 months later I am down 100 lbs!! No complications of any sort. Feeling great, exercising daily and taking my vitamins religiously. Lucky or not, I can eat anything I want without any side effects except hamburger. Burgers seem to cause me to feel pain in my lower right abdomen like it can't process through. Once I get it cleaned out I'm fine though. If I eat anything with sugar, though I don't really dump, I feel yucky like I swallowed a rock or something.
