Dumping before surgery
I have been doing so well and I had a lunch that was too fatty and too big. I have not yet had the surgery, but I have been nails on my high protein, low carb / sugar diet for weeks now. 3 hours after eating I got all the symptoms I have been hearing about with Dumping. Nausea, sweating, abdominal cramping, and general toilet destruction.
Do you think I had pre-op dumping?
My husband didn't have surgery..but he's lost about 75lbs from completely changing his eating habits..when he has an unhealthy meal once in a while he totally pays for it with stomach pain and 'toilet destruction'(lol). I think your body gets used to better quality foods and freaks out when you give it an occasional plate of fat.
Did you also have dizziness/lightheadedness, shaking, and racing heart? Those are actually the hallmark features of dumping, not the digestive upset symptoms and would have happened MUCH sooner than 3 hours after you ate. Becoming ill just 15 minutes after eating is typical for dumping.
As someone else already mentioned, dumping is a very specific physiological reaction to too much unprocessed sugar (which is normally partially processed by the portion of intestine that we have bypassed) in the lower part of the intestine, so it is not possible to dump without the bypass. Dumping is also not caused by too much fat, just carbs/sugar. Many people get sick after eating something too fatty, but it isn't dumping.
It sounds like your body just didn't like the big fatty meal now that you have been eating a healthier diet. Those symptoms are classic ones for eating too much fat. Many people are very sensitive to fat after the surgery even if they are not sensitive to sugar and don't dump, BTW.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
Thank you Lora. I was worried that if this was happening to me now, that I would have worse than normal dumping after the surgery. It certainly resparked my bypass vs sleeve decision. I'm glad to hear about people who have had these symptoms and have not had major major problems with dumping after surgery. I really just want to do the bypass as I know it's the most successful.
When I ate abusively before surgery I sometimes experienced all the symptoms of dumping, especially the pounding heart, sweating, and of course intestinal distress. That happened not necessarily with sugar, but with overeating of a somewhat balanced (gargantuan) meal. Since surgery I've dumped two or three times. I think it's no worse now, but it happens from different causes.
