People don’t cut my head off for this, but I think it would be real helpful if people who have had surgery and describing the pain they had and medications they took, if they would list if they had Laparoscopic or Open surgery. We seem to be having a lot of pain medication questions lately. Not being a doctor or health professional, I can not say for sure, but would think the amount of pain a person has may depend on the type of WLS you had. In trying to give advise, I think it may depend on these factors along with some others. My pain was just about non-existent, but I had Laparoscopic with just 5 little holes one of which was to take my gall bladder out. So why don’t we make it a practice, if we can remember, to  list the type of operation we had so that we may understand why some are having big time pain and others like me ARE just a pain.

You may be correct, but I'm not so sure.  I had open RNY, but got the same exact pain medication, for the same duration as when I had my Lap-band put in and removed via laparoscopic.  I was told to take tylenol if/when the meds ran out.  I do think, if I needed more after my open procedure that he would have prescribed ifor me.

I did need the entire prescription after my open RNY and only needed about 1/3-1/2 for my other two lap's.

I had Lap Roux N Y.Was given percocet 5mg for pain leaving the hospital.I took 1 the first night home, but it wasn't really for pain,I was just trying to get some sleep.Pain wasn't really too bad,but I've been told I have a pretty high tolerance for pain.

I just got sick and tired of being sick and tired.

People have different pain threshold, some people have higher tolerance of pain, some people have low tolerance of pain.

I had Lap RNY I was in some pain but it was not unbearable. I think my 3 C Sections were worse as I couldn't go to bed and sleep because I had a baby to take care of.  I just had to take things a bit slower and got tired out quickly the first few weeks. I was fortunate to also be in a position to go to bed if I needed to and sleep rather than be awake and concentrate on the pain.

Lap or open may make it easier for the outside to heal, but you are still cutting up internal organs and moving them around no matter how you slice it (ha ha, pun not intended, but it still made me laugh).    I had lap and my biggest cut is still more than 2 inches, I was on pain meds for over a week.   It wasn't horrific, but it took awhile to feel better.

Everyone is so different as far as tolerance to pain etc.  I'm sure lap vs. open does matter but pain is just so different for everyone.

I had open and on day 3 I felt well enough to take regular Tylenol but still used the stronger medication at night.

I had an open RNY.  My pain was tolerable, and I really only used the hydrocodone to help me sleep at night as in the beginning I could only sleep like 4 hours at a time due to being uncomfortable.

It's not only pain tolerance, it's also surgeon technique and the condition of the body. Folks with adhesions are going to experience a lot more pain. I have an incredibly high tolerance for pain but was in utter agony for a couple of weeks after my lap procedure. I didn't understand why until the bruises started showing up. I joke that my doc beat the crap out of me while I was under. He hasn't denied it;)
