Anyone else cook for a living?
I am a cake artist from home and do not employ anyone but myself so any tasting had to be done by me. When I first started looking in to WLS I thought that I would have to give it up completely. I mean, how could I possibly work with sugar all day and not taste it??? I am now 1 week from having my surgery and have been on Optifast for 1 week and a protein modified diet for 1 week with 1 week to go. I am not to have any refined sugar on this diet. I have done a few cakes and starting another today and have yet to have a problem (no finger licking here!). My recipes are now pretty much set in stone and if I have a new recipe I simply have someone else in my family try 1 bite to ensure that it tastes ok. I was more worried about my willpower but I can honestly say that it has not been an issue at all.
I completely understand the reason behind tasting everything that comes out of a kitchen, one to ensure it is seasoned correctly and two to know what it tastes like but is there any way you can speak with your boss and be brutally honest about your surgery and the restrictions. If your boss doesn't have a problem with you not tasting EVERYTHING and you are able to have self control then I wouldn't think it would be an issue.
Good luck!
I don't cook for a living, but do all the cooking for a household of 5 adults. After surgery (2 months ago) I simply modified my "tasting" to include one of my kids as the official taster. I am not big on cheesy dishes (among other things), so my not having to taste various things gives me more freedom to make things the kids like, instead of only what I think they might want. It has worked out surprisingly well (so far), and the kids LOVE to be Guinea pigs, lol
There is a very good chance your tastes will change after surgery. It's a normal thing that happens to many people. I didn't trust my 'taste' for a long time.
