Pre-op diet-could you have caffeine and/or milk?

Hi there-

My dr's office said that I can't have milk for my pre-op diet.  I know that I already like the Slim Fast high protein mix (which I mix with milk). I don't like the ready-made ones as well. Were you able to have milk pre-op? I wonder what the reason is for that. I will definitely ask when I go in for my next appointment (which is 2 weeks before surgery).

Were you able to use milk for your protein mixes post-op?

Also-why is caffeine restricted pre-op? Did your dr. also restrict caffeine?

Thank you so much for your help!

Sincerely,

Pam

Not sure about milk- I have to do two weeks of the liquid optifast...so I guess I'm not having milk....but I'm not sure if that's a rule.  Every surgeon has their own preop diet.

I did was allowed milk, but I did the slim fast low carb shakes, premade. No caffeine for me, easier to get it out of your system before hand then it is to do it right after RNY. Also for the pre op diet they want you to stay under a certain number of calories, carbs, sugar, and protein. The no caffeine is mainly because sodas are alot of sugar, and calories. For my pre-op i had to stay under 1000 calories, 5 shakes at 200 calories each. Under 50grams carbs, 60 oz of water, plus what is in the shakes.

I didn't receive any instructions regarding milk, however, I have had to eliminate caffeine from my diet.  Caffeine has a diuretic effect and can lead to dehydration.  This is of particular concern post-op, when it is difficult to maintain hydration.  The purpose of eliminating it pre-op -  is to so that you'll fare better without it post-op.
