Has anyone had rny that has rheumatoid arthritis? Since we aren't allowed to take nsaids after our surgery then what kind of medications do you take now. I take enbrel shots every week but on occasion if I have a bad flare up, I usually take Aleve. But this will have to change after surgery.

Hi there.  I too have rheum. arthritis, and take enbrel.  What do you have if u don't mind sharing?  I have Ankylosing Spondylitis.  I am doing just fine and don't take NSAIDS.  Altho surgeon said pain meds can be used in place of nsaids.

I had gone from Enbrel shots to Remicaid infusions before having my RNY two years ago. When I would have a flare I would take Tramadol. Since having the RNY and with the weight loss I've been off of all drugs for the past year. My rheumatologist thinks it's from the change in diet (no white foods) and of course the weight loss.

I have had RA for almost 30 years and had rny 6 months ago. I have had no problem without my nsaids except when I first came off them before surgery. I had been on them for almost 30 years and I did have a flare up when I stopped them. It resolved on itS own but my rheumatologist said I could take tramadol or prednisone if needed.

I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was 23. I have been on enbrel for several years. They tried me on the remicade infusions but I was allergic. I take ibuprofen or aleve when I am having a flare up.

Enbrel, Methotrexate there are a myriad of different Rheumatology drugs to "shut down" a flare. However, for pain you have to play a game of mixing Tylenol with things like TENS, rubs (Like Ben-Gay or Icy Hot, etc) Massage Therapy, Jacuzzi therapy etc.

I was on Enbrel, Metho and even some steroids pre-op. Thankfully within 2 yeas Post Op I went into remission with only occasional flares.  Prescription Tramadol helps tons (for pain) as does warm water therapy. (Soaking the joints in warm water with epsom salts).

Good luck and I wish you well!

Warmly,

Jackie

I'm going into this with psoriatic arthritis. Stopped NSAIDs a few months ago, and have been inflamed since. I have Tramadol prescribed to take with Tylenol, and will likely start methotrexate at 6 months out as my surgeon says if all goes well he'll give clearance at that point.
