I am a mom of two college age boys who lives in a small town in central Illinois. My husband and I have been married almost 23 years. He has stuck by me through all my health issues and is so patient. I am ready to do this (WLS) for myself so that I can start to live a healthier life.

On the other side!

9/3/12
I had surgery on Wednesday the 29th and came home in the afternoon on Thursday. My pain is minamal and tylenol does the trick. Yesterday I was bored so went down and walked for 20 minutes at 2.0 on the treadmill. I did fine and it felt good to really stretch my legs. Today I was able to up my time to 33 minutes and speed to 2.3 with absolutely no pain whatsoever. I am feeling better every day and getting all my protein and water in as well. I am looking forward to my doctors appointment on Thursday and the chance to hopefully advance my diet. I am so glad that I had this surgery and that I am on the way to a healthier life. It is funny to me that I don't even remember going in the operating room but went out in the preop room with the versed. The next thing I knew I was walking up in the recovery room! What a great journey so far!!

Oh how I have changed!!

I am in the midst of my preop diet for surgery next Wednesday and as I walking on the treadmill this afternoon I was thinking about how much I have changed in this process. Used to I hated to excercise but not I hate to miss it. Yesterday I had a very busy day that started out early by talking my oldest son's car to Walmart for an oil change. I knew I wouldn't have time for the treadmill and would be gone until 11 or 12 at night. The old me would have said "Oh well!" and sat in the back at Walmart while they worked. The new Karen decided to use the 45 minutes of wait time to get a cart and walk around and around Walmart. I didn't have to miss my excercise and the time went faster too!!

I'm excited!

August 14th Tomorrow is my date for preop testing and my preop education class. I am so excited I am not sure I can sleep tonight. It finally all seems real-like surgery will actually happen. In one week I will start my preop diet. It's going to be strange because I am going out of town overnight while I am on liquids so I will get to take my shakes with me and try to find someplace to eat with hubby where I can get some broth or something. It will work out though! I can't wait to see what is in store for me after surgery in my new healthier life!

I Have A Date!
on August 3, 2012 2:06 pm
August 3. 2012/ Late yesterday afternoon I got the call from the insurance company that I was approved for surgery. What a pleasant surprise--it had only been 1 week and a day since my paperwork had been submitted and I was expecting to wait 2 to 5 weeks per my doctors office. Then at 9 oclock this morning I got a call from Dr. Morales office and I have a date. I will be going on August 15 for pre surgery testing and class and will have surgery on August 29th. I can't wait to get started on my new healthier life!!

The doctors office called this morning and said that they had received all my referrals and clearances from my cardiologist and rheumatologist. An hour later my patient advocate called and gave me an appointment on July 19th to meet with the surgeon. Then the will submit to my insurance company. It's hard to be patient--I am so ready for this to happen but at least the process is moving along. I am so proud of myself because I have been excercising every day and am actually starting to enjoy walking on my treadmill and listening to music! I can't wait to try some new types of excercise as I lose some weight but I am sure enjoying where I am right now!

My Story

I have been heavy my whole life-I weighed 180 when I graduated from high school. I have severe rheumatoid arthritis which is so much worse because of my obesity. I also have high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, and am headed for diabetes. I have considered WLS for about a year and am meeting with a psychologist and a dietitian in the next few weeks to begin the official process. I am somewhat afraid but more excited and looking forward to beginning the journey to a healthier and more active me!
