Colonoscopy - is it different for us?

My hematologist wants me to have a colonoscopy, even though I'm a little young for it (44) and I have no symptoms. He said he wants to establish a baseline.

My question is: is the prep. and procedure different after WLS? Is there anything unusual I might expect?

Thanks!

I don't know about the prep (I have never had one), but any prep that involves a laxative and/or an enema wouldn't need to be altered  The procedure would be no different because your colon was not altered in any way with the RNY.

I had one last week.  I had to take half of the bowel prep the night before and the rest that morning (mine wasn't until 1pm) and no eating anything after noon the day before and clear liquids only.   I also had an EGD, boy our stomas and pouches are weird looking, they gave me pictures.  And by the way, I have diverticulitis so I am glad I had it done, been having intermittent belly pain for months and was worried.  Now I know..  Good luck

I asked the same question at the seminar and the docs laughed at me , I didn't really understand the whole intestinal thing I guess.

The procedure is no different but the prep may be , I can't imagine drinking a gallon of anything !!

It should be the same.  We had surgery on our stomachs and the upper part of our small intestines.  A colonoscopy looks at the large intestine, or colon.  That wasn't altered in any way by RNY.

I had a EGD and colonoscopy last Thursday to take a look and see if there is any reason in there for my left side pain, we know the right side pain is the gall bladder and it's coming out Thursday but have no clue as the the right, surgeon thought it was the cyst on my kidney the urologist said no he didn't believe that so off I went with the GI doc to get scoped.

The procedure of both was the same however the bowel prep!! OMG, I was like you want me to drink how much how fast? I had to take both doses the night before and be on clear liquids for the day. I didn't finish the second half of the prep, I just could not get any more in. I saved it for 20 mins or so to have another go of it but when I went to the bathroom it was clear/yellow see through like the paperwork said it should be when I finished the 2 parts so I just stopped and didn't finish the second half.

You may want to remind the doc of the procedure and see if they want to adjust the dose or tell you to stop when it's clear.

I had one a couple of years ago. The prep is exactly the same as those not having WLS. The nurse did tell me that "you tiny ones feel this more". I laughed and cried at the same time. I think that it was the first time that someone I didn't know called me tiny. People I did know started that when I still had 50-60 pounds to lose! Yeah, tiny as compared to the big woman I used to be. I never did get to explain to the nurse why I laughed and cried when she said that. She probably thought that I am just crazy

I had one early on after my RNY.  I was concerned about drinking all the water required in a short amount of time so my doc said I could have an extra hour to fini****
