Hi, I am three weeks post op and I haven't went to the bathroom in three days...  What should I try first... Is it ok to have prune juice?    Hurting on my left side, I know I would feel better if I went to the bathroom.  Passing gas but just haven't had the urge to go to the bathroom yet... I don't want to wait to long and then it be a real problem.

Thanks Andrea

I'm only 10 days post op but my surgeon said any constipation is due to not taking in enough fluids. Drink.drink.drink! I was also told 30cc's of Milk of Magnesia is ok to take.

Smart girl! I don't know what your plan says but my dietician said no to any fruit juice due to the potential to dump from the natural sugars so early out.   Better yet... get some Milk of Magnesia which works really well.  That is what my NP told me to use in the early stages.  Get some Benefiber unflavored and add it to your food and shakes daily to prevent it in the future.

I also take a stool softener in the am and pm but I have to counter my pain medication which is constipating.

Good luck.

The constipation was unbearable in the beginning because you're still hurting from surgery.  Been there, done that!  I started adding a capful of Miralax to my Crystal Light - once a day - and that helps to keep things running smoothly.  If I even forget to take it once, I'm in misery.

Milk of Magnesia was definitely a big help right after surgery.

Thanks Everyone,   I went and bought the baby food prunes today but ewwww   I think I will go get the Milk of Magnesia tomorrow.     Then start adding the benefiber to my drinks.

I hope you won't need it, but there are glycerine suppositories (Ewwww!) for use if things get really bad. You don't want to be straining with fresh incisions.......
