Should i change primary care doctors is this even OK?
I have had my primary care doctor since 2007 so 6 years. She is a nice lady however i have had nothing but problems with the office.. i get put on hold for 10+ minutes sometimes before even speaking with a receptionist. They also know nothing about my surgery and i know most offices don't but still. So yesterday i called at 12:30 i have had lower tailbone pain since after surgery i have been dealing with the pain thinking it was due to weight loss. I cannot sit on the couch in one position too long without my back stiffing up and in pain that takes my breath away for a few seconds. The last 3 days i've had shooting radiating pain down my left leg to the point i limp and my leg has almost given out on me a few times now. I didn't want to go to the ER i took tylenol every 2 hours, did warm compresses, and like menthol creams hoping it was muscular and it would go away.. it didn't instead it got worse so i called the office yesterday. I have filed a complaint with the office manager already on their RN nurse that does the phone calls, etc. I was trying to get in YESTERDAY. And had she not waited almost 4 hours to call me back i would have gotten an appt yesterday. So once i got on the phone with her about 4pm i told her what was going on. She said i don't know what is going on which i understand nobody can diagnose over the phone. Then she said it was possible it was just constipation pain. Now she knew i had gastric bypass obviously and i brought up my pain she then says to me "I AM SORRY THIS SURGERY WASN'T THE HUGE SUCCESS YOU WERE LOOKING FOR AND YOU HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS" seriously i was offended by that comment first of all i NEVER said i regretted this surgery i've just had some issues along the way i am dealing with. She said i should have called that morning for an appointment i said i called over 3 hours ago she says OH! I tell her clearly i am in pain she says "WELL I DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU, HAVEN'T YOU ALREADY BEEN AT THE ER ENOUGH" I want to try to avoid you going back again. She booked me an appointment for Monday morning with my primary care. She then said well i can talk to the on-call doctor in the office and see if he can help you over the weekend for pain relief at least. About 30 minutes later i get a call stating the doctor thinks with your symptoms and pain you shouldn't wait until Monday and i am making you an appointment tomorrow for the urgent care after hours.
I went today and the doctor was AMAZING she gave me something for the pain and took me seriously. I am having numbness in my left leg now as well. She was concerned and said with the amount of weight i have already lost 136 pounds that is not unusual for other things to arise with the spine. She is concerned with a disc issue or a pinched nerve both of what she said could require shots or even surgery. She said she was emailing my doctor with her concerns and want's me to call Monday and wants me to have a MRI. I told her the nurse didn't really understand me and i feel like most doctors don't with the gastric bypass. She said her mom had the same surgery so she knows all about it. That made me feel immediately comfortable with her and i would honestly like to switch to her for my primary care doctor. She was very kind to my needs and didn't push me off. Plus she is in a different office than that EVIL nurse! I mean what would you do? Also has anyone had disc or nerve problems following RNY with the weight loss? Any advice? Was i overreacting to how i've been treated by this office especially her? This is the same nurse that said to me pre-op that she wanted to switch me to zoloft from the wellbutrin i was on over a year because it was ER and when i could take pills again put me back on the wellbutrin and take me back off the zoloft.
Now with that being said. I would see if maybe physical therapy might help. We see patients all the time with the same problems. Obviously do whatever the new Dr recommends but PT might be helpful. When my sciatica acts up I get sharp pain that goes from my lower back and down my legs. The PT will put me in traction and it works wonders!
Hope you feel better soon.
She sounds like she's exasperated with you - which happens for high need patients sometimes (all health professional get like this sometimes - they just don't all show it like she may have done). Your post is not that unusual to be honest!
If you feel you would do better with another office, then switch! You are the customer and it's up to you to make that choice.

Oh yes i agree me and her haven't clicked at all i have been nice to keep my cool though because several times i wanted to tell her off. It's really too bad because i liked my primary care doctor she is mostly the reason i am leaving! But i need someone who understands this surgery better and doesn't have a rude ass nurse doing all of her triage calls.
