I exerprinced my first dumping syndrome last night
Yup last night on Memorial Day I got my very first dumping syndrome. All cause I chose to eat a fricken hamburger off the grill. I kinda did it to myself cause all the food from the grill was a little greasy. I ate slowly, chewed well, took my time, and well within the hour i was running to the bathroom, buck over my lap puking. Sweating, heart racing feel like I was dying. I know I was sick with nothing bad but dumping.... I should have not even did it cause I can not tolerate any kind of beef, chicken or pork....... I can eat all the unhealthy foods I want like crackers, pretzles, some chips, cheese, baked potato and not have anything wrong. I can even tolerate toast and egg salad. I don't know what's wrong with me. I don't know why I can not tolerate any kind of meat, i even tried fish and it doesn't sit well...... What's going on with me??
My question to you re: what's going on with you, is why WOULD you choose to eat "all the unhealthy foods [you] want", while knowing that they're not good for you. You're still early out for some of the heavier meats to sit easily. I'm only a smidge past you and a can of tuna and I were touch and go for a bit, and I decided to wait another month or so before trying again. You are setting yourself up bigtime for this major surgery you just had to fail, and I'd rather be blunt than to sit back and watch you implode. NOW is the time to reconsider what you're doing. You're early enough out to learn to make better choices than you have been. A few more months and the scale isn't going to be nearly so forgiving. Meat is going to take time. Try cutting it with softer foods like diced tomatoes - that's one way I've found to get some actual meats down. Some fish I can eat, others not yet. We survived the liquid/mushy/etc. diet for how long? I can wait a bit longer until my body is ready for the denser stuff.
This does not sound to me like true 'dumping' but rather your system is still very sensitive to meaty foods. After you have recovered, try three bites only of a hamburger. NO MORE THAN 3 BITES! Chew the crud out of it. If you still get that sick after an hour you need to have a talk with your surgeon. Not being able to keep anything but yogurt or liquid down was a symptom of a fistula I was diagnosed with.
If your eating more than that, the volume of food alone might be the cause of your being ill especially if you are less than 6 months out from surgery.
With dumping it's usually either a milk product or something with real sugar in it that will at the very least make you break out in cold sweat and your heart race for no less than 15 minutes. Something really greasy can make you have the runs especially if you don't have a gall bladder.
I'm 6.5 months out and usually can only handle about 1/2 of a 3 oz burger... it's just too dense. I experienced what you described only once (so far) and that was after eating about 2 oz of crock pot, pot roast. Have you tried any chili? That goes down the easiest for me. Sometimes, if chicken is on the dry side, I will dip it in applesauce.
Was there something along with the pot roast? Dumping is a physical reaction to sugar and pure protein such as beef will not cause it. Too much fat can make you very ill, but is not dumping.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
No, I didn't think this was dumping, but, all of a sudden just had that 'stuck' feeling and then about 45 minutes later, got my only experience with the 'foamies...' I DID use some gravy.. didn't think it was that much? Recipe called for cranberry sauce? So, maybe it was sugar? I dunno... I've had small amounts of sugar.. even in some yogurts that had more sugar than I expected. Haven't had the issue since. I DID eat a bite of fried taco shell that sent me to the bathroom once. Otherwise, in 6.5 months have had no issues. I also haven't strayed too far from the eating plan I'm supposed to be following though. (French fry here or there-don't seem to bother me, but don't really want more than two.. couple of doritos)
Fat doesn't cause dumping. It may make you very ill, but it isn't technically dumping. If you are having trouble tolerating meat, a fatty meat will DEFINITELY make you ill. You should limit yourself to very small amounts until you know how you are going to react. The "white" carbs (pretzels, crackers, etc.) usually go down just fine even though they are terrible food choices, Especially early out.
Stick to protein. You are not doing yourself any favors by eating the pretzels, etc. so soon after surgery and may regret having started back on them so soon once you are further down the road and struggling to stay on plan and maintain your weight loss. LOTS of people say they wish they had held off on adding those kinds of foods back into their diet, but I have NEVER heard anyone say they wished they had started eating them sooner or was glad they started eating them early out.
