Hi my name is Christina. I had my RNY on April 4,2013 and have lost 130 pounds, 70 was per surgery. I am now having daily bouts of throwing up everything I eat including even water and my medictions. I have been in the ER 3 times just to get IV treatment. Each time I have been there they said I was extremely low on Magnesium and Potasium. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen.

This Wednesday I am going in for a scope to see if the opening is plugged from scar tissue. Kind of apprehensive about all of this, but I really would lie to stop getting sick all the time.

Low potassium can be life threatening. As for magnesium - low levels can cause muscle cramps and problem with bones. A simple way tho increase magnesium is to take a bath in Epsom salt solution. Put 1-2 cups of that in bathtab and soak for 20 min. Potassium need to be taken by mouth or IV.

I went to the ER for dehydration around 6 weeks out. I got the "banana bag" they called it -- IV multivitamin -- and potassium. I felt incredibly better after that.

Use epsom salt or magnesium oil you apply to your skin to get your magnesium and you can make your own sugar free gatorade to get potassium and other electrolytes. Here's one recipe:

32 oz water
1/8 tsp baking soda
1 tsp Lite Salt (a mix of salt and potassium)
Crystal Light or sugar free Kool Aid (to taste)
Splenda (to taste)

I have used all sorts of powdered drink mixes for flavoring. Crystal Light Fruit Punch is by far my favorite to make with this.

If you don't like the home mix and/or can spend the money, VegaSport makes an electrolyte drink mix that's really good. I think the lemon-lime is hideous but the berry is good. It has 400mg of potassium in just one packet which is equal to one banana. We need 4700mg a day and that's a hard number to achieve, even for me and I can eat a full 6-8oz of food at each meal at 6 years out now.
