Food stuck -please help.

Just started soft foods and ate some chicken which I thought was moist enough but wasn't. Now it's stuck. It's been 3 hours, I've had terrible abdominal pain and have vomited several times (although no food came up, just liquid and foamies. What can I do to make this go away?

BTW, moist chicken is approved for me at this stage.

Try sipping on hot tea. Papaya enzymes are great to have on hand in case this happens again.

yes- hot tea helps! You might also try going for a walk. And this sounds odd & TMI- but sometimes I get a "traffic jam" in my pouch when I need to have a BM! Try sitting on the toilet- it may help.

Hope you feel better quick! Sometimes this just happens- even when we "follow the rules"!

There is a LOT of intestine between your pouch and your rectum, and it seems very unlikely that your entire intestine is filled with food. If you really believe that it is, you might want to talk to your surgeon about whether or not you may have motility issues (which can lead to bowel obstructions).

Thanks for the suggestions.  I sent my daughter for papaya enzymes so hopefully that will help. I.ve had a BM since this started but it didn't seem to help much. I'll try the walking too!

For future reference, if you chew everything to "mush" (as close to applesauce consistency as the type of food permits), it is next to impossible to get anything stuck.  That means chewing chicken, beef, etc. twice as long as other foods, but you won't have to go through what you are struggling with tonight.  My surgeon was adamant about the "mush", and the only time I have had anything stuck in 6 years is when I was in a hurry and didn't chew some chicken well.  Fortunately, I was able to throw it up right away so was spared any pain.

Chew, chew, chew.

Just want to add this suggestion...a phone call to your surgeon's office might not be a bad idea even if it's for record-keeping purposes.  Papaya has worked well for me and hope you'll find it just as helpful.

I was told that if food got stuck, try drinking warm liquids or taking a warm bath!

I had the exact same thing happen at the point you are at.  Mine required a trip to the ER, I was admitted for a scope and a day in the hospital getting IV fluids.  Fortunately, I didn't have to stay overnight, but I learned a lesson.  Good luck.

I had the exact same thing happen on Friday night and it was a miserable 10 hours.  I was pretty sure I was headed to the ER.  It finally passed, but I'm getting some papaya enzymes, although lesson learned.  Can't chew enough!  Praying you are better by now!!
