What is the maximum amount of protein?
Another question!!! As most of you know I've been having trouble with getting my protein in. My nutritionist recommends adding half unflavored powder and half chocolate to my shakes so that it won't be as strong and chocolatey. I was thinking I could add a whole scoop of unflavored and half a scoop of chocolate and that'd give me close to 40 grams of protein. I remember my nut saying a while back that we could only absorb so much protein at one time so I was just wondering what that number isvv
It's been said we can't absorb more than 30 grams of protein. However, there has never been any studies to confirm this number. If there has been one or more, I'd like to see them.
I did try to keep my shakes at around 30 when I did them.

The ASMBS says there is NOT a maximum amount of protein we can absorb at one time, although that is yet another popular myth.
However, we need protein spread out over the course of the day, so if you get 60 grams of protein for breakfast and then continue to get protein the rest of the day, you'd be ending up with more protein than you probably need, which would also mean more calories than you need. I usually make shakes with about 20 to 30 grams of protein. My other meals/snacks are usually 15 to 20 grams or protein, unless I just have some fruit or something for a snack, which of course is very low in protein.

My protein is spread out similar to Kelly's right now. I have one Syntrax Nectar Cappuccino shake (usually at lunch or dinner, which is 30g protein when you add in the milk) and 2 protein "meals" ranging from 15-22g each. Then I have a snack around 7p which is around 10-12g as well. I think I'd just keep it at one scoop of powder (however you choose to mix it up) per shake, it gets too thick otherwise imho and it's only meant to be 8 oz. or less in size. What other brands and flavors have you tried to see if you can find something you like better? Strawberry goes down well, Syntrax Vanilla Bean Torte and Cappuccino are really good.
At my two meals I really keep it strictly about protein right now, I haven't added in carbs yet (even low GI ones) or veggies, etc. but occasionally put a little fruit in my Greek yogurt or something. Some of the things I'm eating that you might consider once you move to the "soft" stage (after puree, but right before "real" foods) are veggie patties (my favorite are Morningstar Black bean ones), a scrambled egg with 1/4 cup fat free shredded cheese mixed in, low sodium kidney beans (I use as a side dish to another protein), 2-3 oz. salmon or canned chunk light tuna fish. For the tuna fish I mix a 2.6 oz. can (drained) with 2 tbsp. low fat mayo, some pepper and dried onions to taste, it's really, really good. All of these ideas came from my meal planners that my nutritionist gave me and have been really great. I am 5.5 weeks out now.
I am only on liquids right now so all of that stuff you've mentioned sounds yummy but can't have it right now!! Lol I have tried body fortress which is what I drank before surgery...I've tried that with water and Ice, half water half silk, more concentrated that usual. I recently tried nectar Caribbean cooler bc I though that maybe it wouldn't be as thick and creamy, that made me sick. I've tried vanilla premier protein I think it is called, that tastes like condensed milk... It has been a tough run!! I think I've become afraid to buy anything else as far as protein unless its a sample because I can't tolerate anything
I thought the same thing about the lemon tea. I think the vanilla tastes just like vanilla ice cream, though. I make a root beer float protein shake with it.

Hey! I am sorry to hear you are having so many issues =( I'm not sure what you are allowed during your 2wk liquid post op diet but as you know I had surgery the same day as you and am not limited to just protein drinks. Can you have Healthy Request cream soups(strained of course), or dannon light and fit yogurt/greek or sugar free jello/pudding? These are all approved by my Dr and have really helped me to get in all my fluids and protein. I want a sandwich SO badly at this point!! hahaha Hang in there, and if you haven't already, maybe try one of the above. Good luck!
Chelsie!! Glad to head from ya! Yes I am having a terrible time with protein!! I've been doing alot better getting in liquids though. I have tried different types of protein mixing it different ways and nothing works!! Uh. Now I'm just scared to drink it and I think I'm pretty much scarred on chocolate lol I can tolerate the unjury chicken soup so I've just. Been drinking that. I will probably try the half scoop of chocolate and half scoop of unflavored and see how that does. Thanks everyone for the help and concern!! Also. As far as what liquids I'm allowed are water any sugar free low cal drink I've drank some powerade zero today, broth, and sugar free popscicles and jello which I'm burnt out on!! Lol
early on - I made strong decaf coffee, made proteins shake (1/2 chocolate 1/2 unflavored) - then I could use ice and coffee and the proteins. Made a good decaf coffee . The coffee helped with the protein sweetness and flavor. Make sure you use good quality decaf coffee. Lousy coffee - lousy drink.
