Vitamin Dangers

Vitamins and supplements are NOT candy. You CAN overdose and cause serious harm to your body. WLS patients need fine tuning and adjustments based on our labs, MD and NUT.

I read a post where someone was eating calcium out of a candy dish and suffered the consequences. To just think that one extra pill cant hurt is a dangerous path.

Consider vitamins like any other medication. Follow direction and keep them away from children and pets. It could be fatal.

You mean like when people take dry 50k iu vitamin D every day for months without getting their blood checked and end up with toxic levels in the 200's+++?

You are going to be  on here, I'm afraid ...

Can't tell you how many times I have tried to counter advice offered on here with KNOWLEDGE, only to be ignored!   When vitamin gurus tell people on here that Vitamin D is NOT toxic in excessive amounts, what are you going to do?

Nice thought, though kiss   Never hurts to try!

Only if you are in some sort of club, apparently LOL!

I wrote, privately, to two of the people giving bad advice asking them where they got their information, one blocked me and the other never bothered to reply ...   What you gonna do?

You're absolutely right.  As you said, supplements should only be adjusted by our medical professionals, based on our blood levels.

We have it drilled into our heads that "as RNY'rs we cannot absorb micro nutrients as well as before."  While that statement is true, some people absorb them better than others!  I absorb the VERY well.  My B12's were off the charts high at my first two draws. Had to cut way back.

It's SO important to have your routine blood work and follow up visits.  It can save some permanent damage.

I agree with you.

I am a lot more concerned about vitamin deficiency than vitamin toxicity, because deficiency is much more likely, especially after RNY.  But it is absolutely possible to take too much of some vitamins, and that can absolutely be harmful.  That is one reason it is so important to get labs done regularly and adjust our vitamins accordingly.

I see people post sometimes saying something like "I've been really tired lately.  Should I take more iron?"  And I always say "What is your iron level?"  Taking more iron will only give you more energy if the reason you are tired is because your iron level is low, and it is possible to take too much iron and cause problems.

Beware of smarts!  You are absolutely correct, although some people go with internet doctors in their supplementation it SHOULDN'T be done without labs and your doctor input.
