Cold Feet

Messing up on the diet does not make you a bad candidate for the surgery. My surgery was 3/4 &  I am down 67 lbs. I messed up thinking I only needed to do my pre-op diet for 1 week but then realized I needed to do it for 2 weeks. I started it when I remembered & I am doing fine. The pre-op diet is more difficult then the post op diet since your stomach much larger then it will be post op. Trust me the pre-op & the 1st few weeks post op are the most difficult times you will have. You can do this!!

Keep in mind this is coming from someone who almost walked out just prior to being rolled into the O.R. since I was so nervous. Now I am loving my ever shrinking body & the extra energy I have & the new clothes I fit into &  just how much I love the new me & can't wait to hit my goal!

YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!

This is just my experience.  The 2 week liquid diet was HELL!!!  I was getting nauseated everyday from not eating.  I actually did cheat one of the days.  After that, I felt better. I did tell my surgeon that I cheated and he said it wasn't a big deal as long as I didn't have anything to eat or drink 12 hours before surgery.   I was very addicted to food pre op and was afraid that I would not be able to adhere to the post op eating.  Well, after surgery I had NO APPETITE at all.  I really don't have one now.  I feel completely different about food.

Now, I am not telling you what to do but just simply sharing my story.   But honestly, you may discover that you feel very differently post op.

I think most everyone gets a little cold feet at first.   And no it doesn't make you a bad candidate for surgery.

Some surgeon's don't even order a liquid diet pre op.

Good Luck to you whatever you do.  If you feel that you are having a difficult time post op, I would recommend therapy. It helps :)

Samantha,

I haven't even been scheduled yet, but I have to say this - you're beautiful and you've gone through a lot already to get where you are now. You are the only one who can make the call about whether or not to have the surgery, but it seems to me you may think you're not worth the effort. You seem to think you're a failure - NOT! You can do this and you are so very worth it. Everyone I know who has had the surgery said the two week liquid diet was pure hell on earth and it basically sucked so bad they didn't think they were going to be able to make it - one cheated. She spoke to her doctor and she had the surgery - today, she looks absolutely amazing and would do it all over again to be where she is right now.

The emotional toll you've already paid to get where you are has been high, but you are worth every bit of blood, sweat and tears you've paid thus far. I would talk to the staff and tell them how you feel and what you're going through. They deal with this every day. Just please be true to yourself and your heart - think about why you started this journey in the first place. Whatever you decide, please know that you're human and none of us are perfect. Don't give up on you - ever.

Would you like to have a a month or two to mentally adjust to going through the surgery?  Get a better grip on post operative reality.  If so then ask for an delay.  It doesn't mean that you are a failure or are dropping out completely.  It will be more gradual approach and you may get through it better with less stress.  No one knows you better than you.  Some doctors require a 3 to 6 month period with a regular diet and it is beneficial because you learn about nutritious food for WLS.  You start to develop a pattern so when you have the surgery you have a head start on the nutrition part.  You aren't dealing with pain, dumping, sipping, etc.  all at the same time.  It is overwhelming as it is.

I'm sure that if you go through with it now, you will get through it but it is your decision.

Liquids for 2 weeks is hard no doubt about it.  I don't think it makes you a bad candidate, heck if we were good at dieting we would not need surgery.

Try your very best.

It doesn't mean you will fail the surgery. I didn't have a liquid diet program and many others didn't either and we didn't fail the surgery. I may have recommended therapy because I honestly feel we can learn to navigate throughout the journey better when we have an unbiased professional to Help address our needs. Be that emotions, self esteem issues, stress.

I don't know if I would have survived the two seek liquid diet nor do I truly understand the reasoning. I was told to eat lean meats and green leafy veggie until surgery (approx a month) to lose 10 lbs and show I was committed to changing my life style. Some do nothing at all before surgery and still are successes.

Most surgeons want to see your liver shrink to make lap surgery first choice of performing it and not converting to open which potentially will cause you to be under anesthesia longer or possible other chances of complications like infections and hernia.

Hi,

I hit "reply" before reading any of the other responses as I didnt want them to taint my personal opinion. NO, do not worry,...bull**** and shame to anyone who told you "you need therapy,  or that you should reschedule"  if you didn't hold true to the two weeks of liquid fasting. This is a very tough thing and I know many people who were not perfect during that two week process. I also know that those same people are enjoying success even after f'ing up during the two week liquid fast. Just do your best.

So, now I must tell you after reading the other posts, that I too was asked by my surgeon to follow a two week liquid fast,..it was tough, and I am sure to get hell for telling you how I handled it,..but here goes anyway. I followed it to a tee throughout the day, at night, I ate an entire can of Progresso Soup Weigh****chers approved on the label of Chicken Soup. It eased my mindset and in the end, I felt like I was eating SOMETHING even though it was really just a slightly enhanced version of a liquid diet. I still lost 18 lbs., in that two week period. , the goal was met in shrinking my liver to ease the surgeons navigation. Did not hurt me a bit, and my surgeon was happy with my progress.

It's ok to screw up- not ok to give up!

I'm on the 2 week liquid protein- I am by no means the poster child for it.  If this is something you want DO IT! The surgery is a great tool.  If you try to cheat on it there something called dumping- a wonderful incentive to not CHEAT.  Research everything Google "cheating on 2 week protein for RNY"  I did!  MANY folks feel exactly like you.  Obesity Help has been my savior- surf all over it- You'll see.

Good luck! xoxo

I have to do 12 days on liquids before my op. I start the liquid stage in 3 days. I'm not looking forward to it at all. I hope I will be strong enough to not cheat. I read your original post & decided at that point I would never write anything on here that could give ppl a reason to dictate to me. I'm glad your back & sticking up for yourself. It must have been a real let down reading some of the things posted.
