Amt of time post op before returning to desk job

I'm hopefully going to be able to schedule my laproscopic RNY after surgeon meeting coming up.  I've heard very different estimates of how long the recovery will be...from 3 days to 3 months.  I need to see if I can narrow that to give work/family reasonable expectations.  I've heard its different for everybody, but I'm curious what people's general experience has been.  How long before they could make it through a 9 hour day?  How long before the pep in your step came back?

I have a desk job and went back 11 days post op. My surgery was on a Thursday and I went back a week and half later. I will tell you I am a big cry baby when it comes to stomach pain. However, I did just fine when I went back.

I asked a similar question just the other day - look for a slightly older post "Work and RNY". You may find some of the responses I got helpful.

I was out for two weeks. They made me wait until my follow up appointment. I could have gone back after 5 it 6 days though.

I took two weeks off completely then went back part time for 6 weeks.  2 months to feel human again and maybe another month for PEP  LOL

I could have gone back after a week, but I took the whole two weeks off.

Had surgery on Thursday, discharged on Saturday and went back to work on Monday.  The first week I worked half days ( because  all my doctor would allow).  I could not have survived if I had a physical job, as my energy was really low.  But by week #2 I was back to 40+ hours and doing ok.

Good luck,

susan

I'm 2 weeks out tomorrow..I feel awesome and would go back to work if I could..I don't have a desk job though. I work in a retirement home I'd be up a river without a paddle if I needed to assist with a lift or something. My surgeon said 3-6 weeks though.

If all goes well, I think most people could go back to a desk job at 2-3 weeks. Unfortunately, there are many different complications that could change that. I had an infection that required two additional hospitalizations. I am 6 weeks out today. I think in my case, the earliest I would have wanted to go back to a desk job would have been 5 weeks. As a 2nd grade teacher, I'm very thankful that I'll have 8 weeks. The first few weeks of school are crazy tiring!

I expected to be off 2 weeks. Complications kept me off a month and even that was too soon - I forced myself to return because I had business I HAD to attend to. Was off half-days even then. Surgery was 5-15. I returned to a 32 hour week just a week ago. Most go back sooner. Expect a great outcome as that's the norm, but keep plan B in the back of your mind. Good luck, and I wish you a speedy uneventful recovery!
