ok i have a surgery date set for Sept 3rd, and i must admit i am very excited but now nervous my favorite cousin is very excited for me but she was kind of upset that i am just now telling her that i am having the surgery, she stated  tht we are too close to keep things like this from each other she stated tht this is a very serious surgery which it is, but then she went on to say to make sure to take care of myself because she knows (2) people that has died from this one of the girls was 26 years old and she died 2 yrs post op from a heart attack  one was a neighbor the other was a co-worker, she stated tht she was doing fine eating right and exercising and all of a sudden she could not breath so they took her to the hospital and once she got there one minute she was sitting up talking to her family then she just basically code blue and everyone was so shock because she had been doing so well , the other young lady was 32 and she just was going back and fourth from the hospital very sic****il she eventually died from complications from the surgery, so when she told me this it gave me that scared feeling and i don't like that because i have 3 children who i am doing this for so can any of the Vets tell me what can lead to death after surgery or if you guys no of any onc that has been very successful more that 15yrs out with no problem i need some encouragement please and Thank you all!

Since only about one in 350 people that have RNY die from something related to it, it's very unusual she knows two people that did.  Unless, that is, she  knows 700 people or more than had RNY.  I don't think I even know 700 people, period, let alone 700 that had RNY!

How does she know the two people she knows that died, died of something related to surgery.  For instance, the one that was two years post op and had a heart attack.  Many people have heart attacks that are not related in any way to RNY.  How did RNY cause a heart attack in that person?  And the other that had trouble breathing.  How did her RNY cause her to have trouble breathing?

I agree with Kelly. Yes, it is possible to die from surgery complications - whether it's WLS or tonsils out. I do believe most of the WLS deaths result from those who are in weight ranges exceeding 400 pounds and/or already have a serious pre-existing condition (heart disease, etc.). You can also die from a car accident, but, no doubt, you still manage to get in cars. It is perfectly normal to be scared before such a life-changing operation. I literally wrote "good-bye" letters to my friends/family just in case. Statistically speaking, you are going to be just fine, and your health will actually improve. Speaking of statistics, if you don't go through with the surgery, and choose to remain obese, your chances of dying will be significantly raised. And I will tell you, my mother died from diabetes complications - it is not a quick and painless death, and it was so hard to watch her go through all that. So, take a deep breath, keep reading this site to stay informed, and enjoy your success!

How many people do you think died in the same time frame from Obesity? Many hundreds. Just let those comments pass. You will do fine and be around for your kids for a long time.

She died 2 yrs later of a heart attack ? That's not from the surgery .  Anyhow, percentage wise it's a very very low rate of mortality. It's more likely you would die of comorbilities )spellings wrong).

She has no right to be mad at you. Selfish.
