Question about crushing pills?

I have been taking pills whole since a couple hours after surgery. First time I tried to get out of bed I was dry heaving so they gave me zofran to help, which it did!
My surgeon's practice has been around over 20 years and follows the ASMBS guidelines.

I was not told to crush or use chewables after surgery, but I had some issues swallowing pills in the first few weeks.   I never had trouble swallowing pills before surgery, so I am wondering if maybe my throat or esophagus were swollen post surgery for a bit.  After a few weeks I was fine and swallowed everything.

This has been a burning....literally, question for me as well! I've been crushing and it's AWFUL!!  But what about capsules? Should they be opened or can we just take them normally as well?

I was told to crush everything, even my 2mg pain pills. All of my vitamins have to be chewable or liquid. I wasn't given a time frame for when that would end. Or a reason. But let me tell you; some of those pills are NASTY!

As for capsules, I'm supposed to cut them open. 

I'm happy to see this discussion.  My surgeon recommends crushing for 8 weeks and perhaps longer.  He does use the "stuck in the sutures/staples" reasoning, but he also expressed concern about meds dissolving and being properly absorbed after RNY due to the decreased time in the stomach, etc.  For that reason, I can see that it might be advantageous to cut the larger pills into pieces, as many of you do.  I'm going to press him on this issue at my postop appointment on Monday--I'm sick of swallowing the bitter, crushed gunk!

Now that's an interesting reason, now I'm curious too if our meds lack proper absorption due to decreased time in the stomach...Anyone know?
