I had my surgery at Methodist hospital in Houston.  They have a very active Weight Management Program with a support group that meets the last Tuesday of each month.  It meets tonight.  The topic for tonight is Preventing Stalls.  Yes, Preventing stalls.  How fast do you think I can get there.  Into a,front row seat this time. This should be really good!  Last month it was Minimally Invasive and Batiatric Surgery Surgical Critical Care.  Ugh.....I skipped that one.  Sounded like a downer.  Dr. Tariq gave the talk.  He is a funny guy but who could lighten up critical care?  I will report if there is any magic they impart.

Oh, wish they had this at my clinic. We have the same surgery date and I am in a stall.. Ugh... no matter what I do, the scale won't move. I am heading for metabolic testing on Friday.. Let me know how the session goes and what good tips they provide.

I did metabolic testing too.  The MedGem resting metabolic rate.  Then the registered dietitian set my calories for a 2 lb. per week loss.  She also wanted me to,have a thyroid check as that can slow weight loss. She said the parameters for what is normal for thyroid had been changed recently and I needed a retest.  She has thyroid problems and so is tuned into it.  Of course she weighs about 90 lbs and is a size 000 I think.  But she said if she messed with her thyroid meds she gained immediately.  I had a really hard time feeling sorry for the, little thing but I took a retest.

I hope this provides some useful into.  I thought we just had to ride it out.

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

I highly doubt that there IS anything that will prevent stalls.  If there were, every doctor in the country would be telling patients about it.  They are likely going to just reinforce "best practices" -- high protein, limiting carbs, as much water as you can get in, regular exercise, etc.

I don't understand the big worrying about a stall??? YOU didn't gain all your weight at one time, you're not going to lose it all at one time either. When we were going up on the scale we stalled and slowed down our weight GAIN, why do we think it's going to be any different on the way down?? Besides, your skin and your body in general have a chance to "catch up" when you're on a plateau. Your skin gets a chance to shrink back, your metabolism gets a rest before kicking in again, your digestion in general gets to take a break before going at it again. I had my surgery at 44 and my doc said I'd need plastics after just based on my age. Well I lost slowly, plateaued often, drank a ton of water and kept up the exercise and I didn't/don't need it. The plateaus gave my skin a chance to shrink back and I now don't have the hanging skin many get from really rapid weight loss. I know I would have liked to have lost a lot faster - keeping up with others, etc - but looking back I'm sooooo glad I had plateaus and stalls just to give my body a break. It also gives your liver and kidneys a break because they work overtime when we're in that rapid losing stage. Hang in there - plateaus will not last, keep up the good work and in the end you'll be glad you had a little break here and there.

Interesting topic and would love for you to share what you are told.  Honestly, I personally do not believe there is a way to prevent plateaus and stalls IF you are following a good, solid eating program it's just going to happen.

Now if you aren't eating correctly then of course you can make changes to help encourage weight loss.
