RNY Death preventable,,,,,
Think you can come home and eat a cheese burger, pizza, whole hot dog first week ?
Guess again.....
I work with one of the docs involved with this case.
RNY 40yr old female goes home and within a few days stuffs herself with a cheeseburger(how much I dont know)
Comes to the hospital blocked and in misery as you can imagine.
She went under general anesthesia to have the food removed.
She vomited and aspirated the food into her lungs. She died 4 days later.
This is a life changing surgery. Rules exist for a reason. If you cant follow them, DONT HAVE THE SURGERY !!!
One of my good friend's husband had RNY and almost died. He's alive but not the same person.....he's entire staple line broke down within days of being released from the hospital. She swears it's because he literally chugged a 16 oz bottle of water (not sure how that didn't hurt) within just a few minutes.
I don't know if I agree with her, I think something else went wrong and the water just triggered the final trip to the hospital and emergency surgery to find out there were NO staples to be found. So weird to me even if the staples didn't hold for some reason it appears they would have found them, right? No sign of them anywhere. They had to clean him out he was already septic. The guy was in a facility for almost a year touch and go if he would survive. He did, is disabled and has twice tried to kill himself with pain pills and alcohol.....so much so that he was pouring vodka through his feeding tube.

After reading this string, I think it's important to note that before you have the surgery you need to do your research...on your surgeon, on the life style changes required and the state of your psyche. I don't think any one wants to fail but I know not all doctors are qualified to do this surgery and don't offer a comprehensive program that offers education on nutrition, exercise, and perform psychological evaluations before cutting them open. Since many of us have numerous health issues compelling us to find a solution to our weight issues, I would recommend that you get recommendations from your various doctors on surgeons. Then after meeting with the surgeon you aren't required to attend education workshops, to meet with a nutritionist, and a psychologist...get out of there.
I would also recommend that you really look at your relationship with food. If you can't imagine your life without the 2 litters of coke, cheeseburgers and fries top off with a cheesecake, no surgery is going to help. If you can't stick to the pre-surgery diet maybe you aren't ready for the life style change required.
One last thing, I know I couldn't have been as successful without the love and support of my husband and if at all possible surround yourself with people that only want for you to be happy and healthy. My husband has been with me every step of the way, never missing a class, doctor's appointment, taking notes on everything. He made homemade kicked up chicken broth that sustained me in those first few days. He held me tight when I was depressed and assured me that things would get better. Today almost 8 months later he continues to guide me to the right foods, portion sizes and exercise routines. As much as my surgeon's knife, his support has given me back my health.
In closing, do your research and be honest with yourself. The surgery can be a wonderful tool.
I just can not even imagine trying to eat anything even remotely resembling a cheeseburger at a few days out.
When did this happen?
I woke up in between a memory and a dream...

Very sad. And crazy. Well... crazy stupid, anyway.
I have talked with people whose understanding of what this surgery involves, both physically and in terms of eating/lifestyle changes, was VERY minimal, people who had extremely unrealistic expectations about the whole thing, and people who were not even close to being mentally for surgery, but I have never personally come across anyone like this woman (or the infamous KFC-bowl woman here from a few years ago), but every now and then situations like these pop up. From both a personal and professional standpoint, I wish I could talk to one of these people to understand what is going on inside their head/heart.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
