I had surgery in April, then the next month i got my first kidney stone. Since May i keep getting 1 or 2 kidney stone attack a month. It's every month. I am dealing with another kidney stone attack right now as we speak. I have gone to see a urologist and he said that they are so small they will pass themselves. But I am in so bad pain I had to call my doctor and he called in some pain medicine for it. My urologist wants to see me in November to do another ultrasound but he doesn't understand why I am getting them every month! I am literally on pain medicine every month..... Does anyone know why I keep getting them so much?

I have had several bouts of kidney stones myself in the past 3 years (but had never had a kidney stone before my RNY and didn't have any for the first 3 years after), and a couple of months ago I had to have lithotripsy done on two stones that were much too large to pass on their own, so I started doing some research.  Below is a link to the post I made about what I found about RNY and kidney stones.

The two biggest things are to make sure you are drinking enough water and that you are taking calcium citrate not calcium carbonate.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions about the other post.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

I dealt with kidney stone pain for over a year.. not knowing thats what was causing my pain.  2 weeks before my RNY surgery, I went in for a kidney stone zap.  After a week, I finally got relief.  Thought I was over it for good but one week after my RNY, I got hit with another one, bad.... I now know I HAVE to drink PLENTY of fluids to keep them from returning.  SO my advice to you---- DRINK DRINK DRINK!!!!  It truly does help.

It depends on the type of stones.  Almost all types of any significant size show up just fine on ultrasound and X-rays.  Some, such as uric acid stones, show up on ultrasound but not on X-ray.  For most, though, there is no reason to incur the extra expense for a CT over a simple and inexpensive (relative to a CT) ultrasound.
