I need help

Last Wednesday, my husband left the house to get himself some dinner. He died about a mile from our house on his way back, we think of a massive heart attack. My surgery was 8/6/13, It was something we were doing together. I am lost without him. I had to travel for his funeral, but basically since about 5:30 Thursday (last) morning, I haven't kept hardly anything with calories down. I can drink fine, but as soon as I try to eat it comes right back up. Everything. Even things I was eating successfully before his death. I don't think it's a problem with the surgery. I think it is the grief and stress, but I am not sure what to do. I haven't kept any vitamins down except my B12 because it is sublingual. I haven't weighed in a week because we are still in a  hotel where he was buried yesterday.

I have called my surgeon. At the time they weren't concerned because it was either last Thursday or Friday, and I am sure they thought it would get better. They just told me to concentrate on the fluids. I have taken Zofran to no effect, xanax, and clonipin (please forgive my spelling). None have any effect on my ability to keep anything down.

If you have any suggestions I would appreciate them. Also my stomach has been hurting, so I am continuing to take the Pepcid.

Thank you,

Heather

I am so sorry for your loss.  I cannot imagine how awful this must be for you.  I'm sure the grief and stress could be upsetting your stomach and making you feel ill.

Can you do protein drinks?  You'll be OK without vitamins for a couple weeks.

Oh my gosh, that is so devastating!  I am so sorry for your loss.  I can't imagine what you are going through.  I hope you have some close friends and family to support you.  We are certainly here for you, but it's not the same.

If you can tolerate protein shakes, I would do that for now.  Premier Protein shakes from Sam's Club (probably other places too) are the best tasting ones I can find.  They have 30 grams of protein and only 11 ounces - so you aren't drinking forever.

Heather I am so sorry to hear this news.  I agree with Kelly - try protein drinks.  Don't worry and focus so much on it - your body has had a huge shock on top of the surgery itself.  Worry about it will only increase the stress and you don't need that right now.  IF you are drinking fine, stick to drinking your protein and calories for now.  Once you are back home and have had some time to adjust then try some really soft food.  My prayers are with you and know that your OH board friends are here for you.

I am no longer defined, by the wreckage behind!

I don't know that I have any ideas for you food-wise that someone else hasn't already suggested, but I just wanted to let you know how terribly sorry I am for your loss.

So sorry for your loss!

Concentrate on fluids at the moment - whatever you can drink will be fine - don't worry about food or protein shakes or anything you can't stomach.   Once you are getting in enough fluids, you can start to consider shakes and food - again whatever you can manage.  You will be just fine health wise on fluids for several weeks.

Vitamin deficiencies don't occur in weeks - so don't worry about those until you feel able - the B12 sublingual is a good idea.

((((Heather)))) I'm so sorry for your loss.  Call your doctor and let him know what's going on.  You are grieving, it's understandable; the pouch being so small and the stress you are going through it very well could be why nothing is staying down.  Are you able to keep liquids down?  If so, try getting in some protein drinks and by all means keep pushing water to stay hydrated.  You don't want to experience dehydration and end up in the hospital with everything going on right now.

You'll be in my thoughts as you get through this time.  My condolences to you and your family.
