Bandaids and Surgical Site
Hey all, to all of you who have dealt with bandaids and had a reaction to them after "x" amount of days, can you tell me how you remedied it. Where my drain was, I was told to keep a bandaid on it for another week for it to close properly. Well, tonight I got in the shower and had intense burning that I thought was the actual drain site. However, I soon realized that it was around the site and that I was breaking out where the bandaid was. I still need to use the bandaids for another 5 days, but boy is it sore. Temporarily I have just turned the bandaid in another direction. Thanks for the help.
Making your own 'bandaid' isn't as hard as it may sound, and it's much, much easier on your skin.
Buy yourself some paper first aid tape. Then get some gauze pads. Cut the gauze into squares the width of the tape you bought (should be the same width as the bandaids you are using now. Cut the tape a little longer than the length of your current bandaid; put the square of the gauze in the middle of the length of tape (stick it on the sticky side), flip it over, and voila - a homemade bandaid for sensitive skin. Even with a paper tape bandaide, I would still alternate the direction every time you change it.
I used gauze pads covered by Press N Seal. The hospital used it on me and I used it at home. Not anywhere near as irritating as band-aids or tape and bandages. You can make whatever sized area you want. Some days I used a smaller amount than others, just to give some of my skin a respite.
My drain was in for 10 days and I shudder to think how irritated my skin would have been if I'd used conventional methods.
I woke up in between a memory and a dream...

Hi there, like DukeMom said, make your own. I am 7 days post op and have been making my own with non- stick gauze pads and paper tape. I cut the gauze pad in half and tape the four sides over the drain tube spot. It works perfect, stays on with no problems. I would try this option with tape for sensitive skin and stay away from the band aids. Good luck :-)

I have some serious adhesive reactions, so I ask for glue. You might want to see if they will glue the wound for you, assuming it does not need to weep. A glued wound is not for those that must leak or drip to properly heal.
