First food stage???

Hey y'all, I am 7 days post op and can now start the next stage of my diet. I have been on clear liquids since surgery. My instructions are to begin this stage between days 7 -14 post op. if you feel actual hunger or weak, dizzy, fatigued & fluids do not help.  Yesterday and today I have been trying to decide if I am actually hungry or if its just my head. I have this slight feeling in my stomach/pouch that may be hunger but I am not weak, dizzy or fatigued.  I am still having quite a bit of left side pain (had Haital hernia repair with my RNY) and still taking prescription pain meds as directed but am walking 4 times as day and drinking my clear liquids ( getting 40 - 64oz ). At dinner time for my family, the food smells so good ( which I am grateful for as I know some get nausea from the smell) but I don't really feel "hungry" to eat. It's weird!!!

Ok, sorry for the long babble :-). My question is, what was your first food you tried on the soft, mushy, protein stage?

My choices are:  beans, whole or fat free refried, eggs or egg substitute scrambled or hard boiled, canned meats - tuna, chicken, salmon, crab moistened with low-fat mayo/salad dressing, yogurt or mustard; reduced fat cottage, ricotta or shredded cheese, Greek yogurt fat free.

So I feel like a total dip, idiot, etc -lol, asking this super long winded question, but I honestly cannot tell if I am hungry or what.

Thanks for reading through my blabbing and any replies are so appreciated. Y'all all are AWESOME!!!

I had to be on clear liquids for 8 days after surgery - my surgeon then has us go straight from clear liquids to regular food.  I didn't really feel hungry for the first five days.  After that I started feeling really weak and fuzzy - I couldn't think straight and was very grumpy.  I bought a bottle of water at a store, paid for it, then stood there like a dork.  The clerk finally said "You're all set!"  to get rid of me - I was like "Duh! Why am I still standing here?" Then when I left to go meet my husband I turned the wrong way and walked for about 5 minutes before I figured it out.  Anyway, I seriously felt like it wasn't safe for me to be out in public! I feel like that was real hunger! When I was finally able to eat actual food I had about 4 ounces and felt immediately clearer and better.  I haven't really felt hungry since, but I'm eating my three meals a day and 1-2 protein drinks as instructed even if I'm not hungry.  It isn't so much hunger in my stomach, it's more like I feel it in my head- my brain feels starved. The first food I ate was REFRIED BEANS!!! They were so good and tasted like heaven.

Oh my!!!   Thanks so much for sharing. I was thinking refried beans might me a good, soft tasty choice. I have not been out of the house since I came home from surgery. I'm still having a bit of pain & taking pain meds.  I'm ready to get out and be somewhat normal again.

I had my surgery in Canada and our instructions were to begin full fluids after discharge from the hospital and then at 7 days to begin puréed foods for the next seven days or so and then begin soft foods. I could never adjust to the revolting idea of puréed foods but I did eat soft foods and that went fine. I stuck to soups at first and progressed to beans and really well chewed soft veges like carrots and also lentils.

Surgery date is Oct. 17th, 2013 in Ottawa. I was referred to the clinic in September 2012. The person performing my surgery is Dr Amy Neville.

Thank you Nerak. I have to agree about puréed foods, the thought is just yucky to say the least!
