Agreed. I also think that can lead to overeating. At least it used to before my surgery.

Do they have you on protein shakes and want you to get your nourishment from those?  That is the only way I could see those directions making sense.   I eat five or six small meals a day and never get hungry.  In the beginning I had mainly protein shakes and very little foo.

My surgeon does not want me on protein shakes. She want me to eat instead. She said unless I have an issue eating etc, food is a better way to get protein and make you less dependent on protein shakes. She said if I have problems, she will have me start shakes. I am doing good on eating, so far (knock on wood) my pouch likes everything I have eaten - can chicken w/ low fat mayo, can crab meat, mozzarella cheese, refried beans, scrambled eggs, FF Greek yogurt).

I think my problem is not knowing when I am hungry until I feel crummy and then I know.  Yesterday I ate on a schedule and did really good, so I am going to continue on a schedule and talk to my dietician as well.

Thank you for your input.

if I wait to eat until I'm hungry or crappy feeling I end up getting sick. Why? because I eat too fast or too much. Every single time! I try to slow down but something in my head triggers when I get hungry feeling. I've learned now that if I wait too long and I feel hungry to eat something very small, a bite of sandwich meat for example. I wait for it to get in there and get rid of the hungry feeling before I actually eat my meal. It's the only way I've found not to get sick. Also even if you ate the yogurt at 9pm why did you have to stay up so late? When I eat a late night snack I typically go to bed right after. I do this most nights due to my hypoglycemia so I don't wake up with low blood sugar.

I waited to go to bed because I was full and could not sleep. This happened all the time before surgery, if I ate too late at night, I could not sleep for a couple hours.

Maybe I ate too much yogurt as I am still trying to figure things out. I measure everything but maybe I had a bite too much.

Yesterday I ate on a schedule and did not get that weak, yucky feeling. I am going to continue to eat on a schedule.

Tank you so much for your input

I, too, am very confused about why a DOCTOR would tell patients not to eat until they feel bad.  He is basically telling you to wait until your blood sugar bottoms out and THEN eat.  We are already at higher risk for hypoglycemia and reactive hypoglycemia and I would think (just my opinion) that intentionally waiting for your blood sugar to drop (which can be dangerous if it drops too low -- it can cause everything from headaches, nausea, blurred/double vision, and clouded thinking to fainting and seizures!) is inviting ongoing trouble.

As the others said, I would definitely not wait to feel crappy before eating!  Who the hell wants to go through the rest of their lives feeling crappy several times a day?!? That is no way to live, and what happens if you wait until you feel bad and then don't have anything at hand to eat?

If you could not sleep because you ate too much, then obviously you shouldn't eat so much, but you may not have been able to sleep because your body was still trying to stabilize itself.  If you don't wait so log to eat, and eat a proper amount, there would be no reason not to eat and then go to bed.  Some of us purposely eat before bed to avoid waking up shaky.  It is a myth that you will gain weight by going to sleep right after you eat.

I'm really sorry that your surgeon has adopted such a crazy plan (I would ask him if HE waits until he is shaky and dizzy before HE eats!), because it puts you in an awkward position, but this would definitely be one time I would strongly challenge him on his rationale and ask him about the potential dangers (and then probably wouldn't follow his advice anyway).  I would also suggest that you consult your primary physician and ask his/her opinion about it and about the problems you may encounter if you continue to follow that "plan".

Hi Lora, thanks for your input.  I agree that my surgeons plan is weird but they are truly an axing practice and one of the best in south Texas.  The plan say eat when hungry, fatigued, weak or dizzy. I think myron problem is I have not figured out I am hungry/need to eat until I feel crummy - headache & weak. Once I eat, that feeling goes away. But now, after everyone comments, including yours :-), I am going to eat on a schedule and talk to both my surgeon and reg dietician about all of this.

It makes more sense to eat on a schedule especially since I cannot tell if I am "hungry". I am learning my body's new clues.

I had surgery a month ago and eat 6 small meals a day.  1/4 cup of protein first, depending on what it is I can usually have a couple small bites of a steamed veggie, squash is what I started with and am still eating.  I average 60-70 grams of protein a day.  I would ask my doc, do YOU wait until your sick/dizzy/weak to eat.  That's a bit of a crazy way to eat.  Our goal is to form healthy eating habits, protein first for life.  Good luck!
