Walking after surgery

Personally I felt better when I walked.  I would get so sore on my butt/ back from laying down all the time that it felt nice to get up.  When they got me up to walk I would walk maybe 5 to 10 minutes depending on how I felt and then that seemed satisfactory to them.  When I got home, if I found myself awake and not knocked out from the pain medication I would just make a point to get up every few hours to pace around the basement for a few minutes or when I got up to go to the restroom I would pace for a few minutes afterwards.  If I was asleep I didn't set an alarm or anything to get up and walk it was only when I was already awake.  They will give you blood thinners in the hospital as well to help with that so I would just talk to your doctor or look online at possible side effects of blood clots so you can pay attention to it if you are really that concerned about it happening at home.  I never had any issues and I didn't walk all that much like I said just a few minutes here and a few minutes there for a week or so and then when I got more energy I started to increase it a little bit at a time.    Best of luck

Alyssa
