RNY vs VSG... any advice?

Hi, I'm new to this and have lots of questions regarding whether it would be better to have the VSG or the RNY.  I am at 47% BMI and need to lose about 150 pounds.  I'm scared that by choosing the VSG, I won't be successful.  But I'm also afraid of the long term malabsorption effects of the RNY.  I'd appreciate any advice.  I can't find long term data on the successs of the VSG and have never met anyone who had had it.  Most of my friends or co-workers have had the RNY.  If anyone can help, provide advice or resources, I'd be grateful! :)

Honestly if your insurance covers the VSG I would go for it instead of the RNY.  I wish my insurance covered the VSG!  The malabsorption is a huge pain in the but and you never know what health issues may come up as you get older that the RNY can affect the treatment of.  And from what I have heard the success rates are equal for both as far as maintaining.  The decision is ultimately yours and one you need to feel is the best for you.  Just know it is a huge lifestyle change no matter what path you take and there is no going back.

The two main things I think you need to consider are pain medications and acid reflux. With RNY you cannot have NSAIDS. If acid reflux is an issue for you, some surgeons recommend RNY.

You can be successful with either, but they both require work. No surgery is "magic".

I wanted the sleeve, but I had RNY because of my severe GERD. After losing 125 lbs, my GERD has improved much, but I still take Nexium (I'm very slowly weaning off it).  I do miss my NSAIDS :(   I lost weight very slowly for 18 months and did not get to my goal. The malabsorption with rny does not last forever.  Of course this disappoints me, but I try not to dwell on it. There are so many things I can do now that I couldn't do before.
