PCP Hospital

I live in South Bend Indiana and my PCP office is in St Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka where they do not have a Bariatric Department and my Dr has never seen anyone who has had the surgery. Memorial Hospital in town  has a Bariatric program but I don't know if they just want to deal with their patients that had surgery at their hospital. I was going to check into looking for a Dr affliated with Memorial Hospital.  Do you think I should stay or go ?

Are you thinking you need a PCP that has more experience with RNY patients?

Yes, I'm just worried my Dr will not know enough about weight loss surgery and won't know what tests I might need if I have any problems. Should I wait and see how it works out first with my current Dr? I value your opinion.

If you have problems related to your surgery, you should see your surgeon for a diagnosis and treatment.  Many people have their PCP order their labs after a while.  I do.  I take him a list of what labs I want ordered, though.  He wouldn't have known what to order to check for nutritional deficiencies.

Maybe you would want to talk to your current PCP, if you like him, and ask if he feels comfortable treating you after your surgery?  You can also ask if he will consult with your surgeon or another bariatric surgeon if there are things he isn't sure about.

Another question, I read a lot of people go to the Emergency if something is wrong, does the surgeon tell them to go and tell them what test to order because I don't think a Dr will just do a test if you ask them. I'm not sure how that whole issue works because my surgeon is 3 hours away. I don't know what tests to ask for if something goes wrong, not that it will but I don't know the process because if you can't get a hold of your surgeon and you are in pain what should you do. Thanks

Some people call their surgeon and are advised to go to the Er and others just go.  ER docs won't just do a test just because you ask them to, no, but if you tell them what you think the problem is and what test you think you need, if they agree, they will order it.  ER docs can also call your surgeon or another bariatric surgeon to consult if they need to.  and depending on what's wrong, many ER docs are perfectly qualified to diagnose and treat things like ulcers or gall stones.

My PCP and surgeon are 100 miles apart. When my surgeon orders test I always ask to have copies sent to my PCP and vice versa when my local doc does tests for physical, etc. Same with mamo, endoscopy, sleep tests etc...have them sent to everybody.
