Post ops past 1 year and malabsorption

The bidet seat is part of the regular toilet.  I don't think I would like a separate bidet but seat is something I am going to try.

Yes, the Toto one is all in one, and not terribly expensive when you see all the features. For sure check it out!

I'm 5 months out and this has not been the case for me. I can go days with nothing and constipation is an issue,,,   I am now using diuretics to help.  I'm also hungry all the time which I hear is unusual as well. I've had my pouch checked with a 2nd opinion, docs say all looks great. I've had a different experience than many but I've seen others like me as well.

Did you mean stool softener? Because diuretics can actually make constipation worse from what I understand by causing firmer stools with less moisture.

I am open to hearing I am wrong. :)

Believe it. Be more worried about your micronutrients not being absorbed than the calories. I'm 12+ years post op and have health problems which could be directly related to the RNY procedure I had in 2001 when little was known. (I was aware and still think it was worth the risk) I was just diagnosed with autonomic dysfunction (google that and gastric bypass for medical journals ) After going from doctor to doctor for years and loosing who I was as a person, prevention may be as simple as IV infusions of vitamins and micronutrients.

lack of micronutrients can be the cause of depression, lack of energy, forgetfulness , impaired vision, dizzy spells and more. Is your doctor treating your SYMPTOMS or the root of the problem?

Im fortunate I've maintained a healthy weight, but I'm currently NOT HEALTHY. Yet. Scheduled for an IV infusion and will report back.

My Surgeon told me last week that I would always have mal-absorption.   He said that my body would eventually reach a place where my weight would stabilize.  He said that it was important for me to keep a regular check on my blood work.   It's like Kelly and some of the Vets say we must take charge of our own health.

We will always malabsorb micronutrients (vitamins, minerals).

We will not always malabsorb macronutrients (carbs, fat, protein - things with calories).

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

The I don't have to worry easy time lasted until 4 yrs, then I could gain.  It sucked when I figured out I wasn't special and I was gonna have to work to stay at goal.  I cannot eat big meals and I am sure based on output I still malabsorb to some degree.  If I eat anything remotely greasy you see it in the toilet, even things like mayo cause the oil slick.

I had a revision to reduce my malabsorption so I thought I was past that danger, especially after 3 years but a few months after 2 years I started to gain weight eating the same as I have for the previous 3 years.  Not that it was a bad thing as I was lower then I liked but I was surprised.  I am hoping the bounce back will take me where I wanted to land originally but after that I may very well be watching what I eat like everyone else.  I do want to say that I have stayed away from junk that got me morbidly obese even when I lost too much weight so it's not like I have a free for all every day but I do eat things like fats and complex carbs pretty freely and I have a feeling those days will be over soon.

I've been thinking about that a lot lately...  Thanks for bringing it up.

I use MyFitnessPal to track foods.  It tells me that based on my calorie goals and metabolic rate, I should lose about 2.5 lbs a week.  Of course, it doesn't know I had RNY.  I'd expect to lose more than that, due to malabsorption.  The average of all 18 weeks of losses and gains since my surgery is 2.9 lbs per week.

There are so many variables.. days I eat more than the 700 cal, the early days that I ate less than 700, exercise, no exercise... but on average, I have lost a little more than the strict calories-in, calories-out equation predicts. ie... "the malabsorption factor".

Dividing 2.9 (actual) by 2.5 (predicted), I get 1.16.  For those that are better at math than me, is that about 16%??  So we could guess that my "malabsorption factor" is 16%?  ???  ?????

It will be interesting to see how that changes over time.
