While going thru the 8-month pre-surgery approval process including a bazillion and two tests, it was discovered that I had GERD so badly that it had developed into Barrett's Esophagus, for which RNY has proven theraputic.  That discovery means I need annual (or thereabout) follow up EGD.  Had it done yesterday and found that despite great vitamin levels, almost perfect diet, regular exercise, etc.  that I now have 3 ulcers.  Because I am asymptomatic, I am very glad I had the EGD done and wish I'd been more on top of it (should have had by year-end but maxxed out my insurance).  Have a meeting with the surgeon after the pathology report comes back and meanwhile am back on a good dose of omeprezole (was never really clear why my Rx for that ran out and was not renewed) for the next two months.  Anyone been thru this and have any suggestions? I got almost no info on cause or cure or prevention and would like to hear from anyone with similar experience. I will be doing some research but today was back to work with a backlog to clear up and am just now home again.

One other thing, this did push me to go ahead and put in for retirement today, maybe less work stress will help too?  Two weeks and I'm done woot!  Thanks all :)

Happy Retirement and please post your research findings.  There is debate whether coffee can contribute to the development of ulcers.  Curious, are you a coffee drinker?  If yes, how long post-op have you been drinking coffee, how much coffee do you drink, and will you continue to drink coffee?

Oh, thank you!  And good thought but no, I've been a moderate tea drinker in the past but gave up all caffeine about 2 years ago, due to migraine issues.  I stay away from alcohol, peppermint, chocolate, and grains too.  Now I am planning to elevate the head of my bed - like I said, I have no symptoms so was unaware this was going on but will do all I can to alleviate it.  Cannot understand how I developed ulcers, but he said it was not really rare for RNY patients in the area the ulcers were found.  My first EGD -- pre-op -- found no ulcers, but did get the Barrett's Dx.  This time he said the gastrojejunal anastomosis is characterized by ulceration ("Gastrojejunostomy ulcers").

Oh, I also learned that my pouch is 7cm in length (and works wonderfully!).

I had no symptoms of any ulcers myself, and I just got out of major surgery removing more of my stomach and more small intestine. So, take good care of yourself and thank God  you had the EGD. You have the chance to be proactive now instead of reactive as I was. Tack Care, M
