I'm on my 2-week post op diet (last day thank God.) and was wondering. I am only taking in about 200-400 cals a day. Is this normal for post op diet?

You shouldn't spend too much time and energy counting calories at this stage.  Make sure you're eating the correct amounts of the correct foods and getting all your protein supplements.  If not, that is definitely something you need to work toward (and 200 calories suggests you aren't).  Sip those protein shakes!!

Hi Chris,

That sounds about right.  My NUT wouldn't give me a calorie goal, but for two weeks post op I was instructed to be on full liquids (sugar free jello, water, crystal light, protein drinks, cottage cheese) and get 64 oz of liquids a day.  I sipped all day long, and was at about 400 calories per day at that point.

I moved to soft foods after two weeks (other plans keep people on liquids for longer, or pureed foods, and still other plans have people on food after 4 days).  Plans vary widely!

Good luck!

For the first two weeks, I was only sipping protein shakes. For the second two weeks, i was only consuming 300 - 350 calories a day. I'm now able to get to 500 - 600 a day, but that's about it.

Don't worry about calories at all at this point.  Hydration is the most important, and protein is second.  Sip on whatever protein shakes you can tolerate, and as much water as you can stand.

I was doing 160 for a while because one shake was all I could get in over the course of the day.

I remember when I hit 320 it was like YAY ME--2 shakes! :)

Per my surgeon and nutritionist, this is fine and to be expected in their plan, but what does YOUR practice say?

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

I am exactly 1 week out  and just for the heck of it, I used my food tracker in a this website and I only took in about 300 calories a day for the last week.  I agree with other posters on this forum that calories eaten at this stage are probably not as important as getting in enough fluids, at least for my surgeon it is the goal.  I was not given a timeline to progress from one stage to another, only to progress when I can safely get in 64 oz of liquids daily.  I will always default to talking to your surgeon about your concerns.  I do think it is too early to be overly concerned about calorie counting.  Just my one cent.

I was on 20 until month 2, 300 at month 3, 600 at 6 months out, 900 at 9 months out and 1000-1200 for one year out. It sounds like you're on track. Remember your body

will use stored fat to make up what you're not taking in. That's the reason this works. You'll be fine. My surgeon said when I asked him if this wasn't too little - he said

you have plenty to keep you going. You could quit eating for 3 or 4  weeks and use up your stores and still be ok.
