I am preop and a friend's daughter who had WLS just had to have a twisted bowel and hernia repaired. Is this common, I am starting to worry

I don't believe that it is that common, although, it would be interesting to see what the statistics are for OH members.  There are many potential complications that can occur postoperatively, however, there are many risks and complications with obesity as well.

BTW my hernia repair is Wednesday.  I caught it pretty early, so fortunately for me, I didn't have any bowel complications (assuming I make it the next 2 days without a bowel complication).

Best wishes with your journey.

After 8 years my husband had a hernia on/under his incision.   He has gained 70% of his lost weight back.

No, hernias are not particularly common with lap surgery.  Incisional hernias, however, are relatively common with open surgeries.

I had an internal hernia.  They told me that it happened less than 1% of the time. It was scary and hurt like heck but I was in and out of the hospital in less than 24 hours.  Helped that I went straight to the ER my surgeon works out of.  My understanding is that it happens with laproscopic surgeries of any kind, not just wls.  When I was freaking out about complications it really helped me to say, "okay, would I be this freaked out if i was having gall bladder surgery or some other lap surgery?'  Because statistically the risks in many areas are the same.

Not sure how common they are but I did have emergency surgery to repair a hernia in which my bowel became twisted and blood supply was cut off!

Thank you for all of your responses.   I went to the post-op class today and they did not talk about complications but did give us a hand out flyer to take home and read.
