Is the bad taste in the mouth caused by ketosis because of the lack of protein or the lack of carbohydrates? It is driving me crazy and I just want it to go away!

The taste is not really due to those things.  It is just a chemical process that is going on in the body.

Eating mostly protein causes this and about all you can do it stay hydrated (a dry mouth makes it worse) and I chew a lot of sugar free gum to help with the taste and the breath.

Yes this part sucks. Lol. I'm with Jeff I chew sugar free gum and keep drinking. I get pretty self conscious about if my breath smells too that's why I do the gum. I also deal with cotton mouth too so I just keep my mouth as moist as possible  :) Dee

Ketosis comes from being low in carbohydrates. Your body adapts its metabolism to fuel itself differently during ketosis. Many people report a bad, "metallic" taste in their mouth when in ketosis...you can try sugar free mints or just brush your teeth more often. This is a good post describing it: Dr. Michael Eades talks about ketosis and metabolism.
