Vitamin question

Are vitamins FDA approved like prescription drugs?  I know herbal supplements are not.  What about vitamins.  My brother decided he wanted to loose 25 lbs.  So he decided to take several of the fat burning OTC drugs ... one in particular because Dr. Oz recommnded it.  He wound up, after a couple of months of this, in the ER the other night.  He said he was shaking so badly he couldn't walk in and they had to bring him in in a wheel chair, he couldn't fill out the admission papers and when the nurse filled them out for him he couldn't even sign his name.  Very very scary.  After a ton of tests it was determined his liver and gallbladder enzymes were elevated and both organs were inflammed ... especially the liver.  He followed up with his PCP who seriously chewed him out and threw all those fat bruners in his office trash can right in front of my brother.  Good for him.  He said don't  take those supplements ... They are not even approved.  Which made me think.  What about vitamins?  Just curious.

No. They are not approved by the FDA.

Also, Dr. Oz was once a respected cardiac surgeon who is now a quack who gives horrible health advice. I'm glad your brother did not become another casualty of the supplement industry and Dr. Oz.

Although I am not a great follower of Dr Oz he usually does not advise supplements for weight loss. Unless it was actually on his site it could be one of the many fraudulent ads that say Dr Oz approves the drug

(Women's Health) - The Garcinia Cambogia is the latest buzz in the "battle of the bulge". With millions of people praising this so called "miracle pill" that you take as a supplement to lose weight, it has been getting a lot of attention since it was recently featured on The Dr. Oz Show.

Recently featured on the Dr. Oz show!  Garcinia Cambogia is touted for weight loss.  A supplement he pushes.  I have an email they sent me just yesterday offering a test of this pill.

You are right. Previously he had always said he did not support any. I know there had been other ads on Facebook and other sites advertising products he had never mentioned. Personally I would never take anything my doctor didn't know of and approve. Many pills in the health food store can be toxic if not taken properly

I have included a link to the FDA website and its statement regarding dietary substances for your information.
