Rockin Refuel for RNY

Why don't you do protein shakes?

For me, skim milk had too many calories and sugar, and not enough protein. I used a little when I did protein shakes, because the extra protein balanced out the calories. But that's just too many calories to be drinking. When you are a little further out, it's going to leave you feeling awfully hungry.

I never did lowfat anything. I watched the total calories, but didn't mind the fat.

I find that I am getting in between 60 to 70 grams of protein without the shakes. I do the milk for breakfast. Greek yogurt cottage cheese and a chicken sausage for lunch and then some string cheese and sushi for dinner.

Most other foods are not working for me right now. These work so I eat them. I haven't found a ptotien shake that I like since having surgery. The change in my taste ruined them for me.

I like the Premier Protein ready to drink shakes chocolate flavour. I  recently tried vanilla and couldn't handle the taste, way too sweet as well. But they have good numbers 30 g protein, 5 g carbs, 1 g sugar, 3 g fat...160 cal.  :)

Just to let everyone know...I very recently found the Premier Protein RTD shakes at my local Big Lots for $1.00 each. FANTASTIC deal...people looked at me funny when I bought like 40 of them. The cashier did NOT have a 'quanity' button.

I also tried the Rockin Refuel and was shocked when I checked the sugar content (hubby got to drink the remainder). I settled on Premier Protein ready mixed protein drinks before surgery, but they are starting to taste too "protein powdery" so I am looking for other alternatives.  I have found Muscle Milk to be a decent alternative (20g protein, 6g carbs, 170 calories). My plan calls for one protein shake per day long term, so I will probably alternate between several to keep from getting tired of one by drinking it all the time. I also use Bariatric Advantage powdered to mix a shake every once in a while. I like the vanilla flavor mixed with cinnamon and the Iced Latte flavor.

I am nearly 3 years out and that's still more sugar than I eat/drink most days.  Muscle Milk (regular, not low fat) and EAS Myoplex (the 42g protein one) were two that Pouchy liked a lot when I was newer, and that I still drink now in a pinch.

You just have to keep trying until you can find one you can live with, or until you are more comfortable getting your protein from food.

Unless it is NATURAL fruit sugar (from fresh fruit) or Milk Sugar (lactose) I read ALL labels and don't do anything higher than 10 grams sugar. Look for diabetic and LOW/NO sugar choices. As others have said you NEED protein. Be aware that you may or may not dump, but that kind of sugar is way to much even for a "normal/non-surgical" person...We had the surgery and now you have to kind of live like a diabetic...LOW sugar. Even if you don't dump keep it under 10g sugar. You want protein of 15 or more per around 8+oz.  Your mileage may vary. Good luck (By the way, even though I don't technically dump, 44g of sugar would put me in a hypoglycemic spin/rollercoaster which can be vary dangerous.) Reactive Hypoglycemia seems sometimes more common to RNYers than true "dumping".

Warmly,

Ducky
