Iron

I seen my Dietitian now 8 month and she told me to stop taking extra iron because since I'm not getting a period my Multivitamins gives me enough iron, but if I get my period to start taking again. Does that sound right ?

Any blood results to base this on?   I wouldn't go by some vague notion of a dietician but would insist that it was backed up by hard evidence!

I would get labs done to see what your iron is, even women who dont have periods need iron just depends on levels on how much we all need.

Rely on your labs and not the dietitian.  I had a hysterectomy ten years before my WLS.  No uterus...no periods.  I have to get iron infusions 2 times a year to keep my numbers up.

I agree with the others.  Make the decision based on your labs.  What's your serum iron level and your ferritin level?  If both are on the high end of the range, then her advice would sound right to me.

Oh, and without knowing how much iron is in your multi, it's really hard to answer that question.

My dietitian did not have labs for iron, I had other labs but just a few things checked and she asked me why my PCP ordered these they did not have to. I told the dietitian I asked my Dr for some labs but she did not want to do them because I want to catch what is low and correct it. I had a few more labs but I was told Medicare and Medicaid might not pay so did not get them.  Could you tell me if this sounds right. here are a few numbers Vit D25 Hydrox   43 H   Range 30-80 I take 1 50,000mg week I was told good.  Alk Phosphase  182H range 30-137 did not say anything about it.  Vit B1  307 H  range 91-212 I was taking 1 100mg daily told to go to 1 weekly. My B12 2000 range 243-894 told was good, Folate 20.0 range 4.2-19.9 did not say anything.  Any advise would be helpful I respect everyone here.

I don't understand why your vitamin D would be marked high if it's only 43 and the range is listed as 30 to 80.  Personally, I like mine to be at least 80.

As far as your iron, if you haven't had your iron or ferritin checked, I would want to do that before deciding whether or not to stop taking iron.  Medicare and Medicaid have always paid for my iron and ferritin levels but I can't promise they'll pay for yours.  I guess you'd need to call them and check if you aren't sure.

Should I take 2- 50,000 Vit d3 weekly instead of 1 ? My ferritin level will be checked when I go for 1 year visit. Thanks

Your level is absolutely fine - as confirmed by your medical team - do NOT take advice from people who do not have any medical knowledge on what you should be taking vitamin wise!!!!!

It's a dangerous practice and there have been several people who have taken this bad advice and become seriously TOXIC on vitamin D - it is a fat soluble vitamin and the excess is not excreted but stored in your fat cells.
