Kidney stones and Toradol
Since I also have the issue with the blood thinner and have had issues in the past with hyper-anticoagulation, spontaneous bruising and minor internal bleeding, and it isn't just a matter of risking an ulcer, even occasional use isn't a good option for me if there is any way around it.

So sorry to hear you have another kidney stone. As a fellow kidney stone sufferer I live in constant fear of reoccurrence. I hope you're feeling better very soon.

Sorry you had to go through that....I had a similar experience and I did put Toradol on my allergy list, and explained in writing to my Primary Care why I did that. Also put it on my advance directive. So my bariatric surgeon turned me on to IV Tylenol........It has another brand name that I am blanking on at the moment. It is WONDERFUL..worked better than any kind of narcotic or NSAID I have ever had. The pain goes away and no side effects. They only have it in ER's and inpatient hospitals generally. But after that Toradol episode I had (my plastic surgeon tried to ONLY give me that after my mastectomy--he was fired).......I had my primary write out standing orders for pain management, which I carry with me. Did some genetic testing through a company called Genesight, which shows exactly which medications work and which ones don't, genetically, and doctors can modify based on cir****tances.....but all that documentation is generally enough to make ER nurses listen to me when I go in there saying I NEED to try the IV Tylenol, or I NEED to have dilantin (not morphine) after a surgery...because they can't be arbitrary or convenient for them any more, since I have documentation.......I really hope you feel better soon.....that really sucks having kidney stones. Very painful. And shame on those nurses for not listening to you. What a basic violation.
Sorry to hear about the kidney stones. I have had them 3 times prior to WLS and OMG the pain. The last stone was in July this year, and I to had an issue with the pain meds. I told them I could not have Morphine it made me so sick last year when I had my tonsils out, I was in the fetal position, vomiting blood, so they said ok and gave me a non narcotic form of pain med that acts like morphine (I was again sicker than a dog) the ER staff got mad cause I vomited and would not move, moving made it worse. They also sent me home with a prescription of the same med I had just gotten sick on. Now do you think they are on top of things? I was so dissappointed and in pain and couldn't get help (it was 4th of July weekend). I won't even go into what I had to do to have them call me in a pain med that I could take. Thank God I had left over Oxycotten from my tonsilectomy.
I think we all have to be vigilant when at the hospital. There were so many people in and out of my room and they don't appear to share info with each other. Take care and I always ask now what they are putting in my IV or what pills they are giving me. One last thing to share, when I was just out of WLS the nurse taking care of me in my room was asking what meds I was allergic to. I don't remember, a friend told me I gave the info slurring my speech then I told her she could go away I needed to sleep WTH. I was in no condition to give info like that. Take care of yourself and good luck with the stones.
I always list Nsaids as an allergy, it is true actually, I had a severe allergic reaction to prescription strength Motrin after I broke my toe when my son was young. I won't take any Nsaids at all. I had iv morphine when I was in the hospital with my bile duct blockage. It helps me very much.
Good Luck!
Kidney Stones Suck!
Yeah, I will take almost anything else they want to give me besides the Toradol... Morphine, Dilaudid, etc.. It makes me wonder if they are trying NOT to give narcotics at all in case someone is just seeking pain meds. When the CT comes back verifying the stones, though, and they can already see in my record that I have a history of stones, you would think that wouldn't be the case, but who knows...

These stones are painful, seriously I have never had a kidney stone but that bile duct blockage is sort of the same thing and it was the pain that makes you pass out. I begged my co-worker to be brought to the hospital and barely made it there. I got lucky with the pain meds though and you want to know something now that you mention them giving you Toradol, they gave me a pain med and never told me about it. They said they were giving me the stuff to calm down my stomach and I started getting all weird in my head, drugged like, I looked up the side effects on my phone of what they said they gave me and nothing like I was experiencing was mentioned. I didn't know they had given me dilaudid or whatever it was initially until they came to take me by ambulance and the paramedic said he had to ride with me because of the drugs I was on. That is how I knew they gave me anything, I had morphine and Dilaudid both between the two different hospitals. But now that I am thinking about it how do they give you a pain killer of any type without even telling you and I even mentioned I was feeling weird and the nurse said nothing. That is just ****** up. I hope they stop the bull**** and give you something that helps. **** you don't invent kidney stones, they can see them on their stupid scans and I seriously doubt you are in the system as a drug seeker, you have a PhD for godsakes, not the typical drug addict. Uggghhh@hosptials!
Yes, I agree that they should never give you anything whether it's for pain or anything else without telling you what the medication is!
I also understand that they have to give something for pain before they can get you in to do the CT scan to verify that it's kidney stones, but when you can barely walk because of the pain coming entire body is shaking and you're in tears, in they can see on your record that you have a history of kidney stones, they should listen to you when you say you can't take a particular pain medication.
I'm going to take Kelly's suggestion and have my PCP write something on a prescription pad, and then I'm going to go ahead and report an allergy to Toradol and tell them that the allergic reaction is excessive bleeding if they push the issue.
Not surprisingly, no one from the hospital called me today...
