How much weight did you lose? I hate this question... how do you answer?
Yep I agree. Just today my boss asked me, "have you lost more weight? Your face looks skinnier than it was 2 weeks ago?" I was like "YUP! 102 pound loss so far!!"
I mean why be embarrassed about it? We have no problem telling each other here on OH about every horrible, gruesome, and amazing detail about our journey right? Be PROUD!
I don't think people are intentionally being rude. Natural curiosity. I have started paying attention and thinner people as me way more than heavier people.
I tell my friends. I also tell anyone who has a genuine interest in RNY. I want to motivate people.
I am proud of the loss, I am embarrassed I needed to lose it to start with.
This just goes to show how different we all perceive things. I just like to give people the benefit of the doubt and believe they don't realize what they're asking could be offensive. I can understand people being embarrassed about how much weight they had to lose. I'm just SO grateful to be in this place, I'll share it with anyone! LOL
I hate that questions too...and it seems it always comes up in work settings. I say "a lot" and if they are persistent, I just keep saying "quite a lot, and I feel good about my new lifestyle" then dramatically change the conversation to some other topic. It is crazy to me how rude people are about it, because I would NEVER ask someone that. I could see myself asking, "how'd you do it", but never how much have you lost. People can be so inconsiderate.
Thanks Robin.
I will be two years out next months and it has been the best 2 years ever. I am happy and proud. I just wish I could erase Fat Sherrie sometimes... the questions are constant reminders.
I work with patients that I see every six months and for a while it was all I talked about. Now people say, "I see you are keeping your weight off" and I am like holy cow - I had better not gain it back!!!
I actually say how much I've lost even when they don't directly ask! I get the "Wow you've lost a lot of weight" often and I usually smile and say yes almost 60kilos (132lbs)! That stops most folks in their tracks.
I don't like answering how much I weigh now funnily enough - mostly cause I am slightly embarrassed at how little I weigh, it feels almost ridiculous to say out loud. I think people can be thoughtless and prying and rude though it's usually from lack of tact than out of meanness. Though there is no excuse for lack of manners and shouting to you in public is a definite WTF?
You are doing fantastic Sherry! Shout it out or shut the folks down, but know you are rocking it!
