To date, only Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, a common surgical procedure for extreme obesity, has been shown to reverse obesity-induced changes in appetite hormones and the brain’s response to food. This, say the authors, might explain why bariatric surgery is the only treatment showing long-term effectiveness in individuals with sustained obesity.

This is a very interesting article.  Thanks for posting.  I agree that obesity is never cured even with RNY, but just in remission.

Very interesting.

I remember when I met my surgeon at my initial consultation he mentioned something about your body weight being 'stamped in' and something science-y about how RNY would help to change that.

I told him my story about how I was a fat kid, a fat teenager and an obese adult.  About 13 years ago I lost over 100 lbs with Weigh****chers and kept if off for about 2 1/2 years.  Then I got married, got pregnant right away and promptly gained back every single pound.  When I weighed in at my doctors I was exactly the same weight as when I joined WW back in the day.  Case in point.  LOL

Thanks for sharing this article.

For anyone trying to get approved for RNY, they should take this to their PCP and/or insurance company for this sentence alone:

"This, say the authors, might explain why bariatric surgery is the only treatment showing long-term effectiveness in individuals with sustained obesity."

Thanks for sharing. I am going to send this to my family and anyone who questions my decision or tells me I should just join weigh****chers.

Did you sit there politely listening to "well-intended" people tell you how you should join WW, you should get a walking buddy, you should read this book...you should...you should?  If I had a dollar for every time I listened,  I could live on a private island away from all the you shoulds.

I haven't told my family yet because I don't want to hear their negative comments. I am working up the nerve to do it, but I know they will probably ask me why I don't do what (insert name of MO relative here) did to lose weight. Hello, every MO member of my family that lost weight gained it back in short amount of time! You would think they would have figured out by now that those methods don't provide long term loss.

I had one person in particular that was very forceful with their "You can do this on your own"... it put a rift in our relationship. She didn't get the lifetime of struggle.. and the 'yes, I've done all those things, and No, I am not sitting around eating chocolate cakes..." In the end the struggle never ends, but I would rather struggle thin than struggle fat and have all the other things that go along with it...

Interesting article.  I'd like to hand to those people who comment.....he/she lost X amount of weight without surgery.  I feel like they're saying it's a bigger accomplishment to lose without surgery.  WLS is no picnic but I'm so glad it was available to me.  It has changed my life for the better.
